The student and I reviewed his week of school and how he managed his schoolwork. He didn't have any immediate long term projects, but he did let me see his school website through which he receives his homework for Spanish. I advised him to make it a habit of writing down the homework for Spanish into his planner as soon as he gets home from school since this will keep him from having to keep track of homework in two different places (the computer and his planner). He and his mom also mentioned that he had some difficulties with his studying in math - he showed me a recent quiz he took where he had some questions incorrect. The concepts were not difficult, and he had no trouble understanding them - the problem was knowing how to approach and solve the problems. Once I showed him simple methods while explaining what I was doing, he seemed to show a firm grasp of the material with several follow-up practice questions. I advised him to focus on topics in classes that gave him the most trouble as spending time on topics he was strong in would be a waste of valuable study time. I explained that with more practice through reviewing and resolving past homework, it would help reinforce his understanding of how to solve these questions while also making him more comfortable and confident. Most of the topics we covered in his math course were concerning proportions, dimensional analysis, and combinations/ probabilities.

It was great to meet this student for our first session today. We discussed the issues she is having regarding note taking (not remembering what was discussed in class when reviewing notes), not comprehending reading, and having difficulty with mechanics of writing as well as brainstorming ideas. Based on these, we came up with the following goals: (1) develop a good note-taking approach, (2) develop individualized reading comprehension strategies, (3) improve writing through looking at her current writing and editing it as well as working on how to brainstorm, and (4) work on integrating concepts and information, especially for a disjointed course she has in neuroscience.
I made a few initial recommendations to her. First, since she is allowed to record lectures and use her computer in class, I suggested that she look into getting a recording pen, which I think would be beneficial. She also expressed that she was worried about using the computer and having to make diagrams. I suggested she could use the computer and write in (see figure 1) for example in her notes and then draw figure 1 on a piece of paper. Regarding her ADHD, I made some suggestions based on research in that area, including using different colors when highlighting notes, different colors of post-its, etc. I also emphasized focusing on small chunks of information at a time and then summarizing it either in writing or verbally. Another recommendation I made was to chew gum or hold a stress ball when she is working in order to divert the need to fidget and be able to concentrate better. This is all based on ADHD educational research.
Today, we focused on a test that she is concerned about coming up on Tuesday. She is being tested on chapters 1-5 in a marketing class that she just joined. I walked her through the process of what I call "reverse outlining" or taking apart each chapter that she needs to know for her test and outlining it. We worked through a good deal of chapter 3 and I demonstrated how to do this. I gave her my notes on part of chapter 3 as well as a written guide on how to do "reverse outlining." I gave her instructions on what to focus on, such as definitions, examples, summarizing, going in small chunks, reviewing notes in small chunks and highlighting what is important, etc. The exam is on Tuesday before we meet that day.
Before Tuesday, I asked the student to think about (in the back of her mind at least) how my suggestions worked, what study strategies appeared to help most on the test (flashcards? outlining? post-its? verbalization?), and to explore different strategies to find ones that are comfortable and useful. This test is primarily a test on marketing, but it is also a bit of a test of study skills because we will get to see what is working and not working for her and continue to work on those skills and build them in our session on Tuesday. I hope she does well on the test and that the tutoring session alleviated some anxiety about the exam. I think she can really get the hang of this and do well!

We worked on finalizing the student's organization systems for the year and did a check to see how they were working for the first few days of school. We also worked on strategies for reading comprehension using pre-reading and surveying techniques, as well as summarizing techniques. The session finished by reviewing and working on skills related to his current place in the geometry curriculum and physics curriculum.

The student and I met to go over his work from the previous week and make plans for this upcoming week. Since it is the beginning of the school year we did not have much school work to review and quickly went over all subjects. He has a test this week in algebra and will get the review sheet on Monday. Once he has a few tests under his belt we can reevaluate tutoring strategy to address any problem areas. He will also work on developing an organization strategy so that he can keep track of papers from each class.
