Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

PSAT Tutoring review by Caroline in Orem, UT
For our first session, I assessed the student's abilities in reading and math and gathered information about his learning style and preferences. After a one-minute oral fluency assessment and consultation with his reading specialist (who is mom contacted over the phone), it was determined that he is reading at a second grade reading level. We will continue to work on his word-attack techniques for longer words, particularly those that contain diphthongs (vowel combinations). I recommend we incorporate explicit phonics instruction and spelling exercises into his tutoring sessions to strengthen his decoding skills. He is enthusiastic about math and readily participated in a math game that practiced his addition, subtraction, and multiplication skills. He needs to work on memorizing multiplication facts, so he can solve multi-step problems with greater ease and gain confidence while attending to mathematical processes.

Today the student started in on practice pages for perfect tenses. We also went over the assigned homework. Then we reviewed the new reading and she found it interesting and not too difficult. She will receive another one tomorrow. Toward the end, we practiced conversation.

Today we worked through some more logical reasoning. The student's thought process still needs a little refining, but she has come a very long way from when we first started. We'll continue working on additional sections on Thursday.

PSAT Tutoring review by Spencer in Orem, UT
We continued to focus on the reading comprehension sections of the test for the first half of the session before moving on to work on the English section of the test, specifically working on grammatical work such as comma errors, word choice and tone, independent/dependent clause usage, and parallel construction errors. We completed a large number of practice questions for both reading and English sections. The student is showing improvement in reading comprehension after only one session, which is very impressive. I am very confident his skills with the English section of the test will improve quickly as well, based on our experience today. I look forward to continuing work in these areas in the coming days and working more on test-taking strategies.

PSAT Tutoring review by John in Orem, UT
We finished the math section, and we were able to cover both the science and reading sections. I went over some basic tricks that will make the reading and science sections easier - elimination, independent answer, and self-reading. I also talked about how a lot of the answers (especially in the science section) are actually quite simple if you read closely. Often, noticing the right detail can make an answer obvious. Being able to quickly take in details is a skill that you can develop - it's not an inborn trait. Also, I recommended that the student get a study manual.

PSAT Tutoring review by Arjun in Orem, UT
We went over a full practice test. The student did well overall. We went over logical reasoning for the first hour and a half. I think the most important question to ask is what is given, what is inferred? Once you get that, you can look for gaps between the two. I also stressed point of view. The student should distinguish between the author's opinion and other opinions the author raises. Logic games just took us 10 minutes. He is still strong on those. During our review of reading comprehension, I focused on how to keep track of opinions.
