ACT Tutoring review by Ernest in Orem, UT
Today, I made our focus on grammar in an area where I saw some trouble for the student in the past: using present perfect vs. present simple. I had a wealth of material on the subject. I pulled in a video, again a Ted Talk, on the latest revolution in manufacturing, so that we could discuss and also pull out some grammar from the video. We also looked at related vocabulary. Finally, we looked at a couple of professional emails of his, so that we could examine them for errors.

The student and I worked on linear functions again today. She is getting much more comfortable in doing them. She is more capable at determining the next step on her own, and getting the right answer by herself. Today we started a new subject, making tables for graphing linear functions. She caught on quickly and was successful in getting the right answer by herself. I see a big improvement in her math skills already. She also learned a new trick to get rid of the fractions in the equation, which was a big help for her. I hope she remembers this trick, for it will make life much easier for her.

ACT Tutoring review by Jonathan in Orem, UT
The student and I did a quick primer on the exam and timing strategy before reviewing some of the general math toolbox, including trap/partial answers and rounding/estimation. We then turned to the general data sufficiency strategy. He was already familiar with the question type, but felt the problem set was helpful. I asked him to do several questions from the guide, focusing on applying the strategy evenhandedly. He is also going to take a practice exam prior to our next session.

ACT Tutoring review by Katharine in Orem, UT
The student and I had a wonderful session. We started by reviewing her homework. She is really coming along in her understanding of word problems and fractions. Now that she has her multiplication tables down, her division and reduction of fractions skills are strengthened. She has such a positive attitude, and she views all her mistakes as a challenge to do better. From there, we worked on some practice problems on rates in the 6th-grade workbook. After doing a few problems together, she was able to set up the proportions on her own and solve the problems correctly. From there, we finished up our session by working on her 7th grade workbook on how to find areas of certain shapes and how to read charts of data. She had 3 workbook pages for homework.

We began new types of operations with rational expressions, specifically finding lowest common denominator for the sake of addition and subtraction. We also reviewed division by taking the reciprocal of the second rational expression and multiplying.

We worked on more word parts today, which gave us a good start. We followed those up with reading comprehension. We used an Upper Level ISEE test to work on reading comprehension, which included a very difficult passage and gave the students practice guessing at the end of the test.
