Session Summaries by Pre-Calculus Tutors

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Matthew in Orem, UT
Today, we worked on section 1.5 in his text, which covered function manipulations in greater depth and abstraction. He did well today. We will have to work a bit more on complex transformations, but he now has a good handle on rigid and non-rigid transformations of all the basic equation types. I assigned homework and will use that to ascertain how much more we need to do in section 1.5 before working into section 1.6.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Elizabeth in Orem, UT
We started the session by doing a quick review of the student's most recent class test. She also has an upcoming test on parametric equations, so we focused on reviewing how to graph and use parametric equations. We worked on how to translate back and forth between the parametrized and x/y forms of equations, as well as on graphing and recognizing features of these equations. Finally, we worked on using parametric equations in the context of word problems, particularly those involving projectile motion. At the end of the session, we talked about study strategies for the upcoming test.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Kori in Orem, UT
We went over a review sheet for an upcoming "1/2 test" on the graphs of periodic functions. We reviewed how to determine the amplitude, period, vertical shift, and horizontal shift, and how to graph various periodic functions. He seemed to have a good command of the material and finished the review sheet in about half an hour. With the remaining time we continued practicing using other problems in the book, worked on converting equations in the form y=Asin(Bx-C)+D to the form y=AsinB(x-h)+k, and had the student determine the equation of functions I plotted in his graphing calculator and then explaining why his answer was equivalent to the equation I had typed.

Today we reviewed for her quiz on polar equations in sections 9.1-9.3. She was having the most trouble with the details of the graphs, but we got them figured out. She felt confident in identifying the types of graphs. We made a list of the characteristics of the graphs to help her study.

Devoted today's session to reviewing logarithms and preparing for student's upcoming test. Reviewed all rules and properties with logarithms and how to solve various types of equations. Moved on to review packed for test. Reviewed covered translation and reflection of exponential functions, compounding interest and several types of problems involving logarithms. Student did very well and we refreshed her memory regarding some properties and problem solving strategies. I was also informed that the student is now making a 91% in her math class and the family is very pleased with that.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Amy in Orem, UT
In this session, we worked on properties of vector. This included adding and subtracting, multiplying by a scalar, finding the magnitude and unit vector, and finding the dot product and angle between two vectors. The student already has some experience working with vectors from his physics class, so he seemed to have a good understanding of how to work with them.
