Haverhill Poetry Writing Tutoring FAQ
Poetry composition bears a unique balance of free-flowing literary imagery and strict parameters of structural integrity. This marriage between creative expression and rigid construction can lead to an awkward conundrum for writers and students of poetry. To become a competent poet, one must come to appreciate the language and tools in the poet's arsenal, as well as the numerous types of poetic composition and their various uses and effects. If you are in a poetry-focused creative writing course, learning creative writing skills and strategies is just as crucial as familiarizing yourself with all of the relevant literary terms and devices. Whether you are struggling with the poetry fundamentals presented in your coursework or simply want to expand your mastery of poetic composition for a personal pursuit, private tutoring may be able to help you along the way.
Struggling in your course should not make you give up on poetry. Creative writing classes are intense, and the personal nature of poetry can combine with its particular formal challenges to make poetry classes quite difficult. Many students seek outside assistance to overcome this barrier. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a personal poetry writing tutor anywhere across the country that can help you sort through whatever difficulties you are encountering in your particular course. When you work with an expert tutor, you receive personal instruction from a knowledgeable guide that is focused on identifying the aspects of poetry writing upon which you could improve. By dedicating focused attention on these facets of your compositional style, your tutor can provide targeted feedback and tools to help you improve your work. Many poetry tutors have dedicated immense amounts of time to composing their work, studying historical poetry and epics, and identifying the recurring tropes and themes of poetic compositions. Poetry writing tutoring allows your tutor to share his or her background knowledge with you, giving you an incredible resource for developing your creative voice.
Your tutor can assess your current abilities and create an individualized curriculum that is built upon your specific areas of need. Educators have proven their communicative skills and are versed in multiple teaching styles. Your tutor can cater to your learning habits and mental processes, explaining concepts in the ways that are most intuitive to your learning style. Poetry composition is an inherently personal process, which can be tough to develop in a classroom full of peers. With a private instructor, you can receive custom and in-depth feedback on your work. A poetry writing tutor can help you revise and improve individual poems, or help you take a critical look at your writing process to try out different, possibly more effective, approaches. Whichever aspects of your creative process and work you want to focus on improving, your tutor can help you develop the skills to do so. Poetry writing tutoring can be much more efficient than general, one-size-fits-all instruction in creative writing. Tutoring is adapted to addressing the idiosyncrasies of your personal work, treating each student as an individual with unique needs.

We worked on revisions for the student's final essay draft for her English class. The session focused on reviewing and practicing revision strategies built up over the course of the semester. We discussed feedback from the instructor and another tutor and structured it into a checklist of next steps to use as a guide for revising the essay. The student is beginning to assume independent control of many aspects of the writing revision process.
Our lesson today was spent reading over the second piece of literature the student will need to use in her essay, called "Bradbury's Coda". After discussing the article, we began decoding the essay prompt and working towards a thesis. She will begin writing the outline tomorrow.
The student and I reviewed for her final in English including all of the stories she read this year and prepared for what her teacher will be testing the class on. We developed a strategy and an outline for the writing portion. We will continue to review that in our next session as well as history.
Continued to assist client with preparing for her upcoming exam, we completed the review of adverbs, and we reviewed the definition and functions of nouns, which is one of the eight parts of speech. The student did really well with comprehending the use of nouns. Finally, to ensure that the student comprehended the subjects previously covered, I quizzed her about those subjects during the last fifteen minutes of the session.
We began our unit on sentence construction in this lesson. I had the boys take notes on subject and predicate, emphasizing that every sentence must have a noun and a verb. We completed a page of workbook exercises on identifying subject and predicate, and I assigned two more for homework.
