I am a recent graduate from Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and hold two minors--one in Mathematics and the other in Women and Gender Studies. I initially started tutoring back in high school and have since integrated it into my life as more than just a job after seeing how rewarding it was. I enjoy teaching students and seeing the direct impact it has on their life. I want to help students achieve their short-term and long-term academic goals. My philosophy in teaching is to foster an environment that encourages and motivates students to learn effectively. Additionally, I want to ensure that they have the proper tools to master new concepts and skills on their own. Learning to learn is an important skill to possess, and one that requires constant review. Though I have tutored a wide range of subjects, I am most passionate about Mathematics and Physics. I have always enjoyed seeing the occasional breakthroughs students have with the more difficult concepts. However, it's even more rewarding to see students realize the numerous potential applications of math and cultivate a natural appreciation for the subject. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy hiking and biking and playing my ukulele.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My fundamental philosophy in teaching is to foster an environment that encourages kids to learn effectively. Every student's learning experience is unique, and every student consumes knowledge differently. Keeping that in mind, it is important to stay flexible with my teaching approaches to suit the student I am helping. I want to help students reach their short-term academic goals as well as their long-term goals. In order to do so, we must impart the necessary tools for them to efficiently master new concepts and skills on their own.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
The first session is critical in understanding what a student's needs are as well as how she learns best. In order to gauge where the student is at, I might either ask him a few questions or even ask him to take a pre-test. I will make sure that the lesson plan is clear and how assignments and homework will be administered to ensure that the student gets the most from his or her tutoring sessions. It is important to stay focused on the student on the first session, making sure that he or she stays positive about the upcoming lessons. And it is absolutely essential that the student knows that I will help them until they fully understand the concept.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
The best way to help a student become an independent learner is to give them the proper tools that will allow them to think critically. These tools include methods of learning as well as resources such as websites or worksheets that they can refer to. Additionally, it is important to help them harness the skills they already possess that will further bolster their individual study habits.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
One of the best ways to help a student stay motivated is to help them set attainable goals since progress is a really great incentive. It is also necessary to remind them that encountering obstacles is inevitable when learning new concepts, but overcoming them also serves as a great reward and motivator to continue.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I always make sure to take multiple approaches when teaching a student a skill or concept. Sometimes, if a student continues to have difficulty, I tell them to briefly leave the problem and revisit it later. If the student is unable to understand the skill or concept, I would show them how to solve a closely-related problem.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I have always found that giving students examples that they can relate to helps them contextualize the problem more effectively. I have also found that the students who are most successful are those who ask questions. So, it is important that I create an atmosphere in which the students are comfortable asking me questions without feeling judged. This can greatly accelerate learning and can motivate them to consistently do their homework.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
The best way to build a student's confidence in a subject is to have them practice the problems as many times as they can. The more they practice, the better they understand the concepts. Additionally, mock exams can be a great tool to showcase their skill and build their confidence.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
The best way that I can evaluate a student’s needs is to give them some sort of an assessment to gauge their skills. However, in conjunction with that, it is also crucial to directly talk to the students to understand their needs.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
The types of materials I use during a tutoring session depends greatly on the subject I teach as well as the student I am teaching. Worksheets, mini presentations, flashcards, and booklets are only a few of the materials I use.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
In order to help a student get excited with a subject that they are struggling in, I would frame the problems in a way that interests them. This can include explicitly creating problem sets for the subject that are set around their hobbies or even tying the subject to their future goals in a manner that allows them to stay engaged.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
In order to ensure that a student understands the material, I like to give them a short test to showcase their skills. In addition to that, I like to have them teach the material back to me. This is both engaging as well as extremely helpful for them because they have to understand the concept well enough to teach it.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Students who struggle with reading comprehension often struggle with fully understanding the text that they are required to read. To help do that more effectively, I suggest trying to visually imagine the story. This helps stay focused on the details that might otherwise go overlooked.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I adapt my tutoring to my student's needs by staying patient and flexible. Sometimes, it even helps to directly ask the students what they need and how they think I can provide that. Staying flexible with the way I teach is essential to keeping the focus on the student and his or her needs.
