Physical Chemistry Tutoring review by Christopher in Westmont, IL
We went over a practice test in preparation for the student's test this Thursday. It was good material, and very interesting problems. Among the problems, special focus was paid to stereochemistry and EAS reactions. I think the student has a good grasp, and will do well on her exam.

Physical Chemistry Tutoring review by Ahmad in Westmont, IL
Today we covered dimensional analysis and specific heat. Dimensional analysis was used on balanced equations to find out how much reactant was needed to make a certain amount of product. Furthermore, we reviewed limiting reactants. When covering specific heat, we learned to plug in all the known variables and solve for the missing variable. We did this by doing the same the same thing to both sides of the equation until the missing variable was isolated. We learned about the temperature vs. energy graph. We used the law of conservation of energy to determine the mass of water present when hot metal was added to it. We also covered endothermic and exothermic reactions. Finally we covered potential and kinetic energy. The student was eager to learn the material.

Physical Chemistry Tutoring review by Max in Westmont, IL
In continued preparation for the student's exam tomorrow, we persisted in our review of specific topics relevant to the exam. The student had a problem from her review concerning bond energies that I was able to illuminate for her. After that quick start, we spent the majority of the session using practice problems from the question bank to test her understanding of the various concepts. These questions were punctuated with more detailed explanations/illustrations to really drive home the key concepts. We began with items on the spectrum of non-polar covalent, polar covalent, and ionic bonds and molecules. I emphasized how it was the electronegativity difference between the two atoms in a bond that make it polar or ionic, but that polar bonds in a molecule does not necessitate that the whole molecule is polar. We then discussed formal charge in some detail, and had to hash out some discrepancies in the different ways that the formal charge formula is sometimes described. She ended up understanding it better in the end. For the remainder of the session, we practiced knowledge and understanding of various elemental properties and periodic trends like atomic radius, ionization energy, effective nuclear charge, electronegativity, and electron affinity. On the whole, I feel she is well prepared for her exam, and our sessions have cleared up the remaining misconceptions or foggy understandings. Looking forward to seeing how she does on her test going forward.
