Phonics Tutoring review by Shannon in Raleigh-Durham, NC
The student and I studied the four pronunciations of "ou," read and answered questions for his book from school, "The Josefina Story Quilt," read his vocabulary flashcards, took a spelling quiz, and practiced spelling words with "ed" endings with letter tiles. He is doing well reading his chapter book and writing explanations of his answers to questions. He is working on improving sight reading unusual words and retaining what he reads. He will benefit from more exposure to chapter books. He is also doing great with his vocabulary cards, so I removed about half from our collection. Next class, I plan to continue to focus on vowel pair pronunciations and reading comprehension. We will also continue learning new spelling words and practicing writing.

The student worked on learning his spelling words, using a method called rainbow tracing. I wrote his words so that he had a pattern and then he traced them, first in a light color, and then a darker one, one that is darker still, until he had traced them each 5 times, saying the letter name as he wrote and then the whole word before and after writing it. We also worked on measurement for math. He had to compare the sizes of various objects and did a good job demonstrating a clear understanding of the concept.

Phonics Tutoring review by Alyssa in Raleigh-Durham, NC
We did some review to start and kind of ease into the lesson. The student has the differences between the distinct vowels down pretty well. Then, we worked more on /o/. O is a bit complicated because there is another vowel that is very similar to o (and that I usually teach with o because it's not distinctive from o in most dialects of American English) but has spellings that mostly use "a" and therefore can be confusing. The student had some difficulty with the -aw version, so I explained that the -aw version sounds a bit different because there's no consonant following it and thus the vowel gets kind of drawn out and starts to sound different at the end, but really it's the same a -au. We then started working on long u and trying to distinguish between short u, long u, and the u-like sound in words like book. We will work more on that next session.

We worked on the student's language arts homework. She needed some assistance with some reading comprehension and help with some English words she did not know, but she was able to complete her homework assignment.

Phonics Tutoring review by Emily in Raleigh-Durham, NC
The student and I continued to work on beginning and ending sounds in phonics. We also worked on breaking words apart into syllables. She has improved greatly at this, although she still has a hard time telling when words have one syllable. Lastly, we worked extensively on number talks, exploring even and odd number patterns with manipulatives. She is beginning to use the strategies and enjoys describing her budding mathematical thinking. She has also been able to focus much better during our sessions.

Phonics Tutoring review by Adriane in Raleigh-Durham, NC
The student and I found several new Elephant & Piggie books that we had not previously read, so we read those today in the library. Her comprehension is excellent, and she is able to quickly determine the meaning of words she does not recognize based on the context provided by sentences. We also played a math card game together. She is still counting on her fingers rather than adding in her head, but she is becoming so fast at this that I suspect it is more force of habit than actual need at this point.
