Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Colleen in Burnsville, MN
Today's session began by re-reading a familiar leveled reader called "Ben's Pets" (level B). Next we reviewed consonant digraphs (ch, sh, th, wh), which the student's teacher identified as a focus area. We watched a video to help her remember the sounds each digraph makes, and then practiced applying it with a couple worksheets. She is doing much better with these digraphs. In this session, we also reviewed vowels, which we introduced last week. Then I had her sort her sight word flashcards into "know it" and "think about it" piles. She automatically identified 28 sight words and did a great job decoding the "think about it" words.

The student is continuing to practice the Phonic Families. Today we worked on the 'ad' Family words. We also reviewed 'blends'-'gl', 'gr', and digraphs- 'ch', and 'sh'. The student did well with 'CVC' words. More practice is needed with blends and digraphs. The student was able to read books from 'Hooked on Phonics with minimal help from teacher. The student continues to sound out the letters when she is not sure of the pronunciation of words. For practice the student will review 'ad' family words and match pictures to given words.

Phonics Tutoring review by Traci in Burnsville, MN
The student and I went through a multi-sensory, structured phonics lesson. We worked on silent e words in particular. She read a Pete the Cat book and did a really great job. The aspect of her reading that is picking up is being able to use picture and context clues, as well as just trying to sound everything out. That's the thing with learning to read - it is a both/and. It was quite frustrating to me that on the spelling test from last week that was ridiculously difficult, she got no words correct. That was bad, but what made it really appalling was that whoever graded it wrote "Please study" by the big fat 0. This young lady studies, most likely much more than her classmates, but because of her learning difficulties, it does not translate to a test of all memorized, multisyllabic words. Thankfully, her experience is almost done with this school year. Truly, she is making good progress.

Phonics Tutoring review by Jennifer in Burnsville, MN
We reviewed letters A-P and introduced Q-U. We also practiced combining letters to sound out short words and recognizing word endings (-OG, -AT). The student did an excellent job, but struggled with connecting letter sounds into words. I think this to be more a confidence issue than lack of comprehension, so I encouraged him to practice saying the letter sounds out loud when reading.

Phonics Tutoring review by Shaina in Burnsville, MN
Throughout this session, we continued working on fluency and decoding skills. With this, I wanted the student to practice self-monitoring his reading by listening to his voice as he read and noticing if something he said didn't make sense or sound grammatically correct. All in all, he was able to independently self-correct some errors, but neglected to correct others. He showed some improvement since our last session, so we will continue to work on these skills during our next session.

The student and I completed her persuasive letter to her father, asking if she could get a Yorkie. We then turned our attention to the book Baby Chipmunks, which she read with fluency and comprehension!
