Since the assessment exams are coming up soon, I told the student we should spend much of our time reviewing for them. We looked at Global, Earth Science, and Algebra assessment practice tests. The review is very important because the topics are ones we've looked at, in many cases, but he does not remember out of context. If he reads the questions correctly, he can sometimes get them right, but he often rushes through them. Our reading through the questions together will hopefully get him used to how to approach them. Then he found some Global homework on critical turning points in history, and we went through and completed the homework.

We reviewed for the student's upcoming sociology midterm, reviewed her practice quiz and practice essay, and reviewed proper APA formatting for writing college level essays. She is taking her finals tomorrow, and then we will return to focusing on structural English and grammar, as well as essay writing skills.

Phonics Tutoring review by Amanda in Eden Prairie, MN
The student chose to start with reading today. We finished reading chapter 4 of "Sarah Plain and Tall." After reading, I had her add some more character descriptions to the character pictures we drew on Friday. I also asked her comprehension questions about the chapter and had her explain her thinking using details from the story. Then we played Multiplication War. She has definitely improved on the speed of her multiplication facts! We also reviewed how to convert fractions with a denominator of 10, 100, or 1000 to a decimal. She used the math base 10 blocks on just a couple of the questions, otherwise she did very well and had much more confidence completing the problems! With the remaining time, I had her solve problems using the associative property of multiplication (order of the numbers doesn't matter for problems like 4x5x6). We talked about how she should find the easiest 2 numbers to multiply and then multiply the last number.

Today we focused on PSAT test taking strategies, and I also shared information about e-books to the student and her mom. The library system has e-books, and they're interested in checking them out! The student was glad to get the tips that I provided: 1. Read the questions first 2. If an answer choice is too easy...beware and check out the other answers 3. Make notations while reading passages. Success...as my student read today, she only stumbled once on a multi syllabic word...only one. When I had her break the word down, she did it successfully and was able to read the word. Good session tonight.
