Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Jenna in Apple Valley, MN
We played a word game I made up and the student responded very well to it. He basically runs back and forth from me to a nearby wall. Every time he comes back to me, he has to read a word on a card and that is how he earns points. When he is finished with a set of cards, he is awarded a new toy to hold onto during our session. His mom said that he has been using the app I suggested in between our sessions, and it has been helping.

The difference between the student's performance today and his typical performance was astonishing. Astonishing. He literally answered nearly the first 20 of the Algebra assessment all by himself, and correctly. I pointed out a tip here and there, but he was very independent and focused. For the remaining four questions, he needed some more guidance, but he did pick up the material and knew what to do after some nudging. Then he told me that his English teacher is trying to cover all of grammar in a few days, so we went over some common grammar errors, including number correlation, verb parallelism, and words that sound alike but have different definitions. Today's session was highly productive.

Phonics Tutoring review by Margaret in Apple Valley, MN
The student and I completed a review of Greek archetype story patterns through the use of content-based crossword puzzles. She was a little hazy on the specifics, so we completed the puzzle for Percy Jackson Series Books I & II first. She did very well and learned new terms related to storytelling. We discussed new book choices for the coming week, then took time to check out the young adult section of the library. I asked her to read a few chapters of "How to Read Literature Like a Professor" by T. Foster for our next session. She also checked out Twilight by S. Meyer to see if she might like the topic in that series. I agreed to check out and read the first book of the Variant series over the next week. That way I can catch up with her and design fiction/nonfiction lessons using the two books as source material. At our next session, she will bring her school's new list of "Battle" books to read/discuss over the summer as well!

Phonics Tutoring review by Gabrielle in Apple Valley, MN
This was a good and varied session tonight. The student and I developed some of her rich, vibrant new material in chapter five, filling in a few necessary details and clarifying some questions. We also spent a bit of time talking about writing activities she'd like to do in the future (setting activities in particular) and about branching out into poetry, as she wrote a lovely poem for this week's session. We ended with a brief discussion about her writing plans for next week and about reading author interviews to expand her knowledge of the writing world. As always, she has put in good effort and produced thoughtful, compelling writing.
