Phonics Tutoring review by Cynthia in Bloomington, MN
We continue to work on her slam poem. We went over meter-- beats, feet, pentameter, and other types. We watched a couple slam poems and an episode of Naruto. We took the list of possible words from last session and added to them. She began to write the poem; she wrote about 24 lines.

Phonics Tutoring review by Barbara in Bloomington, MN
During today's session we reviewed sight words. I added two additional words to help with the student's writing. We reviewed all vowel sounds, but still emphasized the short e sound. She practiced finding words on our word list chart. She was able to find most of them. I moved her up to a level B book. She was able to read most of it. She used the picture clues and beginning sounds to read some of the words. In writing, we discussed things we see outside. She told me trees, cars, and buses. She wrote those sentences and drew pictures to match. She needs to add more clear details to her pictures. We will be working on that during future sessions. I will be meeting with her tomorrow and Tuesday.

For our first session, we began with the student's spelling words; we then went on to having him read the sight words that he is familiar with for 1st grade. The rest of the session was reading comprehension.

Phonics Tutoring review by Cori in Bloomington, MN
Today, I met the student and his mother to talk about where he currently is with reading. I "leveled" him using the Independent Reading Leveling Assessment to see where he currently was for reading at this grade level. He has strong CVC decoding skills, but does struggle a bit with kindergarten comprehension. We read 2 texts at his level, played the CVC ice cream game, completed a decoding task, and created CVC words using consonant/vowel dice.

Phonics Tutoring review by Matthew in Bloomington, MN
I worked with this student on preparing for the upcoming ELA state exam. She has a mastery for reading comprehension but has difficulty with the essay portions. The direct reading comprehension essays she has no problem with (a direct relation to the story), but when it comes to compare and contrast as well as seeing the author's point of view, she has trouble. What I focused on with her was using basic essay format (intro, topic 1, topic 2, conclusion) and we discussed looking at the terms used by the author vs the relationship between the characters. I use the example of "The Giving Tree," a classic book everyone knows. The plot is well known. However, we focus on how Shel Silverstein described the tree highlighting the humanization and descriptive language used. Also I encouraged her to keep her essay simple, outlining the details first and then filling in the essay language and terms. Overall, she is doing very well and is very much ready for this test.

Phonics Tutoring review by Goke in Bloomington, MN
We read a passage about the Nile River and Egypt. The students utilized a graphic organizer to analyze the passage about Egypt and the Nile River. This metacognitive strategy enhanced the comprehension of the passage. It required them to identify the topic sentence, gather supporting details, and conclude each paragraph in the passage. The girls did a good job using the graphic organizer. They had a good attitude towards the activity executed. It was a productive session.
