Writing has always been a passion of mine, and although it is not for everyone, I believe that passion is contagious.I first began tutoring in my college's Writing Center during my senior year, helping students of all ages improve all different aspects of their writing. This internship allowed me to work with students in on-level Freshman English, and Senior AP Literature. That way, I can understand the way each student grasps concepts, and it allows me to see exactly where a student has trouble with a concept.Outside of academia, I work with an animal rescue and service dog training program. I take part in the rehabilitation process for dogs who need to learn how to live in a home, and I assist in training the service dogs. I am a graduate of Rollins College in Winter Park, FL with a BA in Critical Media and Cultural Studies and Studio Art. Throughout my time at Rollins I was highly engaged with my local community and committed to service. I have a range of tutoring experiences from mentoring 3rd to 5th graders in Title I schools through the Read2Succeed program to being a peer tutor for college-age students at the Rollins Tutoring and Writing Center. I believe education is a keystone for success. Working in a grades 6-12 private school in Vermont for 12 years, I continued to teach middle grades English but also taught grades 9-12. I received my undergraduate education at the University of Maine where I earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science. I pursued my teaching certification at San Francisco State University and later earned a Masters in Educational Administration Degree from that same university. As part of a long career in education, I have always taken the time to work with students in need of additional help and support, believing that we all learn in different ways. My main area of expertise has always been reading comprehension, written expression, grammar, spelling, vocabulary development, study skills, research, and homework help. All Midshipmen (what students at USNA are called) take classes like Calculus, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Thermodynamics, and more to help them prepare to be well-rounded Naval Officers. You better believe I have developed some really useful study skills from all those classes! After graduation I attended flight school in Pensacola, FL and put those study skills to good use, graduating first in my class. I then served as a Naval Flight Officer (or NFO) aboard the Navy's P-3 Orion aircraft. P-3s use a combination of techniques and technologies to fulfill their mission of hunting submarines and providing reconnaissance information. This may not sound like it relates to tutoring, but my previous career taught me three things that make me an ideal tutor: I think quickly on my feet, can approach a problem from many different angles, and I value excellence, precision, and effort above all else!After leaving the service, I pursued my graduate degree in Diplomacy from Norwich University. Having always been a bit of a foreign policy "nerd," I enjoyed learning about the history of modern diplomacy and the international system, modern methods of conflict management, and theories on the future of international relations. I am a member of Sigma Iota Rho (the honor society for international studies) and graduated with a 4.0. Norwich helped me sharpen my writing and editing skills significantly.
