Locating the right Denver SSAT preparation doesn't have to be difficult with the help of Varsity Tutors. Denver SSAT prep is available for grade level appropriate subject area content for all three levels of the SSAT; Elementary, Middle, and Upper. Whether you have a student who needs to prepare for the Upper or Middle Level SSAT or you have a child who will take the Elementary Level SSAT, it is critical they are thoroughly prepared.
The SSAT was designed to give insight into a child's skill in three different academic areas; English, Reading, and Math. Most private and independent schools require these scores as part of their admissions process. While it's not the only thing they will consider, it is an important factor because of the high level of reliability of the exam.
It can be easy for parents to say they want to give their child all of the help they need to reach their potential, but what does that mean? For most parents, it's challenging even to know where to begin to help their child prepare for the SSAT. This confusion is understandable. Education is a complicated field and the amount of information children consume in each grade level is immense. Keep reading to discover more about what will be covered in the SSAT and how Varsity Tutors can help you support your child's preparation efforts.
What can Denver SSAT prep cover?
Regardless of the SSAT level your student will be taking, there are five core subject areas. Two of these, the Writing Sample and the Experimental section, are not counted towards your student's final score. However, the Writing Sample will be sent to admissions officials of any school to which your child applies, so it should be included in their preparatory efforts.
The scored sections of the exam are Quantitative, Reading, and Verbal. Upper and Middle Level SSAT testers will have two Quantitative parts. The Quantitative sections of the SSAT cover grade level appropriate math skills that may include skills and concepts from algebra, geometry, arithmetic. The Reading and Verbal sections of the SSAT both evaluate English language skills and concepts such as reading comprehension, synonyms, antonyms, root words, prefixes, suffixes, main idea, inferences, elements of style, analogies, and parts of speech.
Whether your child needs help refining their skills in one area or all of the areas covered by the SSAT, working with a skilled instructor is a great way to give them the additional academic support they need to maximize their preparation efforts.
How can a Denver SSAT prep class help my child prepare?
Enrolling your student in a prep class is a great way to make sure they don't miss reviewing any valuable information. The structure of the virtual classrooms is similar to what is found in a traditional classroom setting. The teacher will meet with the students and offer direct instruction. They may then encourage class discussions, assign individual or group projects, or answer individual student questions. All of these methods help to further your student's understanding of the topics being covered in the class.
You can choose the class schedule that is best for you and your child when you enroll them. We have two and four-week options available to make sure each student has the right amount of time to prepare. All of the classes are composed of individual sections. New sections start each week, which means your student won't have to wait long to get started.
If you have a child who thrives in group environments, classes are a fantastic option. Class discussions and feedback from peers can be an invaluable tool for motivating some students. The structured learning environment gives students a clear direction and boundaries for their preparation that can help them stay focused.
How is working with a Denver SSAT tutor different from taking a prep course?
Private tutoring provides more direct instruction than is feasible in a Denver SSAT prep course. This difference is not due to a deficiency in the design of courses. The two instructional models simply have different purposes and are designed for different types of student needs. In a classroom setting, teachers deliver redetermined curriculum to a group of students according to a regimented schedule. This format is excellent for ensuring a maximum number of students can have access to affordable academic resources. However, it's not ideal for students who thrive on one-on-one instruction.
When a private tutor works with your child, they have the time to get to know them as an individual rather than as a participant in a class. This gives the instructor insight into your child's learning style, specific SSAT goals, as well as their academic strengths and weaknesses, which can then be used to create personalized tutoring sessions that focus precisely on what your student needs to work towards their learning goals.
Scheduling flexibility is another difference between private and class instruction. Classes are set up with predetermined meeting times to make it easier to coordinate larger numbers of individuals. When your child is working with a private instructor, there are only two personal schedules that must be taken into consideration. You can schedule tutoring sessions throughout the week and on weekends. You can also choose a greater diversity of meeting times, which include morning, afternoon, and evening sessions.
If your child thrives when they work individually with an instructor or if you have a busy schedule and need more flexibility around when the sessions take place, private tutoring may be the best choice.
How can I get my child started with a Denver SSAT prep solution?

Formally, I have taught students at the high school and college level in math and history (Rutgers University - PhD, 1988) and advised many others informally as a banking and investment professional (Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), since 1994). Recently, I have become a math tutor, mentor and substitute teacher in the Denver Public School system and...

Many students feel angry, hopeless, and uninterested in school when they are having trouble. With the right help and time, problem areas can feel less overwhelming and even fun. ...learn. We just need to find the right ways to teach them. Not every student learns in the same way, so it is up to teachers and tutors to help students discover how they learn best. It is often hard to find this out in a classroom of 25 or more students, but with a tutor, students can often find out how they can become lifelong learners and enrich their lives in the process.... I believe that all students have the ability to learn, and with a growth mindset, all students can be successful at whatever they choose to do. I believe that differentiated learning is the key to helping students succeed in school, which is why I enjoy tutoring. I am able to provide 1:1 instruction, thereby giving each student exactly what he or she needs to excel.

I believe that all students can achieve. It takes someone who is willing to work with each student to find out how they learn and apply those techniques to help the student learn.... My teaching philosophy is to help students reach their full potential while providing a safe, caring, and engaging environment.... In the first session with a student, I would find out a little bit about them and find out what might motivate them. I would also do an initial assessment to see where I need to begin my instruction.
