What's tested on the ISEE?
The Independent School Entrance Examination or ISEE is a standardized test that is used as a key part of the applications process at independent schools. There are four different levels of the exam, which correspond to the grade level of your student. The Primary Level is available for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-grade students. Students in 5th or 6th grade can take the Lower Level exam and students entering 7th or 8th grade take the Middle-Level ISEE. Finally, if your student is entering the 9th grade or above, then they'll take the Upper-Level ISEE.
The Upper-Level ISEE is split into five different sections. The first section, Verbal Reasoning, assesses the student's English skills. The questions that your student will be tasked with answering in this section will ask them to identify synonyms and complete sentences. The section features 40 questions and has a time limit of 20 minutes. Next, your student will take the Quantitative Reasoning section of the ISEE. This part of the exam assesses their math skills. Some of the topics covered in Quantitative Reasoning are numbers and operations, data analysis, probability, and problem-solving.
The third Upper-Level ISEE section is called Reading Comprehension. this part of the exam features 36 questions and has a time limit of 35 minutes. The main topics covered here are vocabulary, main and supporting ideas, author's intent, and organization and logic. Fourth, your student will also take the Math Achievement ISEE section. This part of the test has 47 questions and a time limit of 40 minutes. Some of the topics covered here are algebra, geometry, measurement, and more.
Finally, your student will complete their exam with the Essay section. Here, students are given a prompt that focuses on a topic of interest to students at the middle school level. The prompt will give the students a chance to tell the schools they apply to more about themselves. When completing the Essay section, it's important for your student to be able to quickly plan and organize a piece of writing. They'll also get a chance to demonstrate their grammar, punctuation, and spelling abilities.
How can Varsity Tutors help your student prepare for the ISEE?
As detailed above, the ISEE is a challenging standardized exam that features questions on numerous different academic topics. The comprehensive nature of the ISEE makes it a difficult test to prepare for without any guidance. Why not sign your student up for a Boulder ISEE prep option that can help them get more out of their test preparation process? In the paragraphs below, you'll find more information on the specific prep options that are available for you to choose from.
First, you may want to sign your student up to work with a Boulder ISEE tutor. This is a great test preparation resource because it gives your student the opportunity to work directly with their educator. They'll meet with their tutor for a series of one-on-one study sessions where their needs always remain the top priority. Your student's tutor can focus on the specific ISEE topics that your student needs the most help with. For example, if they're having a hard time with the content of the Math Achievement section, their tutor can provide them with the focused guidance they need to make academic progress. Tutoring is a truly personalized academic experience and it's a great option for individuals who are getting ready to take the ISEE.
Or, you may prefer to sign your student up for a Boulder ISEE prep class. This could be a good option for your student if they've traditionally excelled in the classroom learning environment. Each Boulder ISEE prep course takes place on a powerful virtual learning platform that connects a small group of students with an experienced test prep instructor. Your student's course will go through all of the topics that they need to know before the day of their upcoming exam. If your student is having a difficult time with one of the topics covered in their class, then they can even sign up to work with their instructor in a one-on-one setting to get extra help.
Both of these test preparation options are flexible as well. If you want to pursue tutoring, then we'll make every effort to connect you with an ISEE tutor who can work around your student's existing obligations. Similarly, new courses start weekly and there are a variety of options to choose from. We can help you find a course that meets at times that work for both you and your student's schedules. This makes it easy to sign up for the test prep supplement that is the right fit for your student, no matter what their schedule currently looks like.
How can you get started?
Do you think that your student would benefit from one of these Boulder ISEE prep supplements? If so, then you can quickly get them started with the option of your choice by contacting Varsity Tutors today. We'd love to work with your student and to help them feel more confident on the day of their ISEE. We hope to hear from you soon.

I have been teaching management and economics at different levels in the last decades. Teaching is my passion. The best compliment that I have received from students is when they say: You are a real teacher. My explanations are simple and full of practical examples. I have worked as a professor, manager and international business consultant in different countries. I have had a broad educational background in Economics, Finance, Management, Technology and Education.... Sometimes students do not understand the theory, because it has too much math or graphs or you do not know to answer an assignment. In those cases they need simple, practical explanations with examples. That is what I do. In a few words, I help students to improve their comprehension and grades. There is an old English saying: "There are no bad students, there are bad teachers".

Not every student learns in the same way, so it is up to teachers and tutors to help students discover how they learn best.
