Recent Cambridge AP Art History Tutoring Session Notes
Today I worked with the student on preparing for an exam she will be having in class this week. I helped her create a study guide and review the information. The session went very well and the student seems prepared for the exam!
The student and I worked on his cards today. The great thing is, by doing this system (devised by his teacher), I noticed he's memorizing things more quickly. He also is doing a lot more personalizing in order to retain info for the tests.
We went through an old math assignment her teacher asked the student to look through, and then we worked on a couple of her projects in World Cultures and Speech. We talked about her product and marketing strategy for her Speech pitch, and she started making her visual. We also worked on her brochure for Bogota. I helped her lay out the content and found a few nice pictures to include. She's still got a lot to do before the end of the week, but I think she's got a good feel for how to finish these projects now.
In this session, the student and I worked on his homework assignments for the day. With each assignment, he read the questions out loud (as usual) to practice reading comprehension. He did fine with all of the assignments. His social studies homework required him to look up specific words in his online textbook, find the definition, and write a sentence or example for each.
During this session, I worked with student 1 on a review sheet for his social studies exam. The majority of the time was spent finding passages in his textbook that related to the questions asked, having him read the paragraphs and then transcribe the answers into his review sheet. The topics covered centered around African American historical figures such as Ida B. Wells, George Washington Carver, W.E.B Dubois, etc. I also worked with student 2 on reading comprehension. He had to read two passages and then answer questions on both which required him to discuss similarities and differences between the paragraphs, as well as to pick out themes and settings.
First, I worked on Forensic Science with the student because he had informed me he had a quiz the next day. We rewrote the key definitions and I made him a practice quiz to test his knowledge. We then went over a few cases related to the subject from the textbook and also completed the chapter quiz in the end of the chapter. Later we moved onto US History. He has a test on Thursday and wanted to start reviewing his review sheet. We went through each question and rewrote easy to memorize concise phrases to the answers. Lastly we started and almost finished his English homework on Lord of the Flies. The homework consisted of questions summarizing the story including themes, symbolism, irony and character analysis. Overall it was a good session where we had a lot on our plate but managed to go through each one smoothly.
