Algebra Tutoring review by Martin in Hyde Park, IL
The student and I had a productive session today. We did a good bit of review of material that he had struggled a bit with in our Monday session. We focused on simplifying expressions with square roots, including cases in which multiple radical expressions are added together. He was having trouble with these at the start of our session today, but I felt that he was getting much better by the end and that he is now fully up to speed in the class. I always enjoy meeting with him, and I will look forward to seeing him again next Monday afternoon.

The student and I practiced systems of equations. We focused on the elimination method for simple systems and the process. I set her up with self correcting practice problems. I asked her to do the problems and to contact me with any questions she may have.

Algebra Tutoring review by Matthew in Hyde Park, IL
The student and I prepared for tomorrow's test on probabilities, statistics, and a smattering of linear equations. I first went over the definition of probability, different types of probabilities, how it's expressed and used, its properties and range, and some associated terms like event, outcomes, odds, complement, etc. We also went over lines of best fit (regression lines), how to draw it through the scatter plot (best with a clear ruler), and then how to derive our regression line's equation using two convenient points, and our knowledge of linear equations (i.e., slope, y-intercept, etc.). She was very comfortable with mean, median, and mode, so we didn't review those.

Algebra Tutoring review by Simon in Hyde Park, IL
The student and I primarily focused on linear equations and slope-intercept form. After some explaining, he got the basic idea of the problem-solving techniques he was being asked to demonstrate. At one point, he mentioned that he didn't know whether to draw graphs with two vs. four quadrants, so I told him that the number of quadrants in the graph depends on the nature of the data being plotted. If the graph were, for example, payment for a task per hour, there would be no logical reason to go into negative numbers on either axis. Despite not having an idea at the beginning of some problems, he was a quick study when he caught on to the patterns he was being asked to remember and perform. I will be interested to see what he retains when we meet again on Thursday.

Algebra Tutoring review by Noah in Hyde Park, IL
The student and I put the finishing touches on his unit 2 assessment, and made some significant progress on his activity work in unit 3. The concepts themselves are a review for him, but applying these concepts in real world situations is challenging. That being said, he excelled at the graphical interpretation of lines, and finding the slope.

Algebra Tutoring review by Nicolette in Hyde Park, IL
The student and I review for test on linear functions. She had to know how to graph and find the slope, y-intercept, and zeros of a linear function. I showed her functions on the free online graphing calculator so that she could have a picture of how the look. She seemed understand concepts and felt confident.
