Session Summaries by ACT Writing Tutors

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Casey in Chester County, PA
The student and I first addressed what she hoped to get out of our sessions together in terms of both score improvement and overall testing/academic abilities. Then we discussed what she felt her biggest strengths and weaknesses were when she took the ACT for the first time. For the most part, she has a solid grasp on the test content, but struggles with pacing herself and dealing with testing anxiety. I suggested she first work on slowing down and reading every question very carefully. She seems to be an aural learner, so we also worked on reading passages aloud to enhance understanding. Then, we went through the practice reading and English quizzes in her ACT book together, discussing each question and answer while she took some notes. Finally, she completed one quiz for reading and one for English on her own. I scored them and we discussed all the answers - both correct and incorrect. Many of the mistakes she made stemmed from failing to read the details of the question rather than a complete misunderstanding of the content addressed. I think with some practice, this problem can be alleviated. Next time, we will do a full, timed practice test in both subjects to continue to work on pacing and comprehension. Overall, I was very impressed with her willingness to learn and try new techniques. She is a dedicated student and I think she'll get a lot out of our coming sessions.

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Kristyn in Chester County, PA
This session we covered the Math, Reading, and Science sections of the ACT. Math: We started off with a geometry review to cover a few of the questions the student had from his extra practice work. The review mostly consisted of a review of rules for Congruent triangles (SAS, ASA, SSS, AAS, HL) and Similar triangles (AAA). Lastly we talked about the other case, SSA, which sometimes has 2 possibilities for triangles. Reading: The student worked through four reading passages. He has previously been doing well with questions accuracy, but had trouble with consistency in regards to time. This session, I had him complete all his passages in a limited time frame. He was allowed <4min for the passage and 30 sec/question. He was given extra time per questions if he had completed previous questions in <30 sec. This method was used to give him a better sense of how the timing of the passage should run. He started to adjust to the timing by the 3rd and 4th passage and was able to answer 6-8/10 questions correctly. Science: The student worked through 3 science passages. He did well with all passages and we reviewed strategies for specific types of questions (extrapolation, relationship, min/max, etc.).

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Doron in Chester County, PA
The student and I worked on the reading section of the ACT. We did so by reviewing the last two passages of a practice exam and a live session of a different practice exam reading section. The prose section is his weakest, so I am suggesting he take the exam "backward." As time is the determiner of his success, it is best he spend his time first on his best sections. We also discussed the concept of tambre and how it can affect answer choices as a strategy for him to dismiss incorrect options. Overall, he has made great improvement in time management on the reading section. We will continue with the English and mathematics sections of the next practice exam.

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Sonya in Chester County, PA
Today, we focused on science, as that is the student's most problematic area. She's doing better on timing but still struggles with accuracy. We will work on that in future sessions. Then, we went on to math! She is doing much better and is more comfortable both with the content and strategies involved.

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Grace in Chester County, PA
The student and I spent the session strengthening her knowledge of some of the concepts on the English session. We went through the practice test she did for homework and identified that she was having some trouble with subject/ verb agreement, so we did a test to help fix this. We also used tests to work on modifying pronouns and other concepts. Then we returned to the general ACT practice test to make sure these concepts were stable. She will keep on practicing this week so that they stick in her brain, and next week we will work on timing for the reading section!
