Tutoring review by Kalea in Overland, MO
Today we discussed analyzing data and distribution specifically looking at dot plots, and box and whisker plots. In these problems we looked at the symmetry of the set, the cluster areas, gaps, peaks, outliers, center, and spread of the data. For the symmetric data sets this included finding the mean and the mean absolute deviation. For the non-symmetric sets it included finding the median and the IQR of the data set.

For this tutoring session we covered more on acid and bases. The student had worksheets that he needed to work on. He finished most of it while I was there. The student was definitely understood most of the concepts, he just needed more clarification on the subject. I made sure that the student understood the concept before we moved on. The student seems to be improving as each session goes by.

The student and I worked on graphing rational functions. We learned how to find the x-intercept, y-intercept, domain, range, vertical asymptotes, and horizontal asymptotes in order to graph the rational function. We created a system/check list of things needed to do in order to graph. Once the student practiced going through the steps, she became much more comfortable. We did problems out of my textbook, so she is able to do her HW as more practice.

Tutoring review by Julie in Overland, MO
This session, we went over a review sheet assigned by her teacher. This sheet included finding the domain and range of functions; transforming, composing, and inverting them; graphing functions; and expanding and condensing logarithms. The student struggled the most with finding domain and range of functions, their transformations, their compositions, and their inverses. It is really important for her to remember the domain and range of basic functions, like the square root and logarithm functions. She also expressed reservations about graphing functions, but it seemed that by the end of the session she was more comfortable with his: all she needs to remember is that graphing is a two-step process, involving 1) finding intercepts and 2) analyzing end behavior. I think the most helpful thing for her to do would be to create a study guide. She doesn't need to summarize her entire syllabus, but I think it would be helpful for her to note the following concepts: -Definitions of even & odd, including how to determine if a function is even or odd. -Domain and range of square root & logarithm functions. -How to reflect over the x- & y-axes, shift, and stretch a graph. -How the domain and range of a graph change when it is reflected, shifted, or stretched. -Logarithm rules. We also discussed probability (specifically, the multiplication and addition principles), but we only had a chance to touch on it briefly. She mentioned that her teacher did not cover this topic in class, so if she has any other questions, please let me know!

We looked over the student's schedule for next year and talked about strategies for processing and focus. We also worked through Spanish exercises (focusing on food vocabulary) and made flashcards for the words he had trouble remembering.

Today was our introductory session. We worked on data sufficiency questions. The student hasn't seen this stuff for many years so will need to relearn most of the math rules from the ground up. I gave him the link to online GMAT questions which I think will be very helpful to him. We were mostly looking at inequalities with exponents and he was starting to understand. We will review the progress he makes on his own next time and begin from there.
