Tutoring review by Samuel in Marysville, WA
We reviewed the midpoint and distance formulas, as well as the Pythagorean theorem. The course is just beginning so we worked through a few problems and discussed the format of future sessions. One focus for future studies should be to remember to distribute negative symbols when manipulating equations. The student seems hard working and ambitious, as well as eager to do well.

The student and I covered sections 3.8, 9.1, 9.2, and 9.3. He was able to complete all of the homework sections for those listed sections as they were past due. We will meet on Thursday this week to continue working on sessions in the library.

Tutoring review by Lauren in Marysville, WA
The student and I had a tough time today on account of power outages in her area, but we did manage to get through quite a bit on implicit differentiation. She gets the overall concept; she just gets a little hung up when trying to deal with more complicated derivatives involving chain/power rules as well as implicit differentiation. We talked about thinking about the problem in pieces and tackling it from there to simplify the process. It seems that her teacher focuses on a lot of graphically based questions, but since she didn't have her textbook, it was harder to practice specifics. I sent her worked out example problems, as well as some more practice problem. Hopefully next session, we'll be able to clear up any remaining questions she has.

We broke down a deadline for each essay/school. We brainstormed and finalized ideas. The student and I both did research on school essays from last year of students who were accepted. I edited his honors application and then edited/spent time working with him on his common app main essay outline.

Tutoring review by John in Marysville, WA
This was an excellent session. We worked on the start of his essay on The Scarlet Letter. The student was engaged the entire time and you could tell he had not only read the book but thoughtfully considered the material. He needed some work setting up the thesis. I tried to stress that every paragraph should relate to the thesis and every sentence of a paragraph should follow the main idea in the topic sentence. I found out he received an A on the previous paper we worked on together although it did need a few specific improvements his teacher requires. I think he is close to really breaking through in understanding how to set up an exemplary paper.
