Recent Centerville Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Melania in Centerville, UT
Student 1: We began by reviewing her homework assignment for the evening, which involved adding and subtracting fractions and determining the least common denominator. Overall she did well. We also discussed the material on her midterm and any areas of difficulty to revisit in future sessions. We went through a couple of review problems in her HW assignment, and she made a few simple errors with long division but overall seemed comfortable with the material. Student 2: Student 2 worked on her assignment which covered the distributive property and working with variables. She had some difficulty understanding the concept of expanding then simplifying algebraic expressions, as well as understanding the need to maintain the order of operations in these expressions. However after some explanation she seemed much more comfortable with these concepts.

We did practice problems on parabolas and ellipses. For each problem, we were given an equation of a parabola/ellipse and used it to find the vertices, foci, directrix, etc., which I showed the student how to do. He was able to pick it up very well, and I hope this session gave him a jumpstart for his next pre-calc class.

Tutoring review by Stephanie in Centerville, UT
We went through some of the student's old tests and the exercises associated with them, trying to pinpoint what was difficult for her. We determined that her difficulty lies with seeing the figures; the mechanics are easy, but she can't figure out how to apply them. Our plan for the future will be to do lots of practice problems.

Tutoring review by Matjaz in Centerville, UT
Today, we covered the basics of u-substitution. We covered examples when u is a polynomial, trig function, or just a linear function. We also covered examples that were better done without the u substitution, for contrast. The student has the method down pat and is confident in her ability to evaluate integrals using u substitution.

Tutoring review by Matthew in Centerville, UT
The student and I began working on Algebra basic formulas. We also talked about her pre-test and reviewed problems that she missed on finding area of a triangle, mean, median, mode, and following proper order for solving multi-step equations. I gave her another practice test for homework and provided worksheets for added practice with algebra. We will continue with algebra and work into geometry next session.
