Sunrise, FL Physics tutoring
I met with the student to review material for an upcoming test on wave physics. The material covered wave largely conceptual and included transverse vs longitudinal waves, wave reflection, refraction and diffraction, and the effects of material properties on wave propagation. To help solidify the material I offered several physical analogues that can be understood on a less abstract level. A portion of the material also involved basic calculations of properties such as wavelength and velocity. To help with this material I explained how the different relationships can be derived be simply analyzing the units involved, i.e. the reason why with frequency measured in Hz - 1/s, wavelength measured in meters - m, and velocity being defined as meters per second - m/s, velocity could be found by multiplying frequency and wavelength.

In today's session, we continued to cover wave behaviors and properties of waves. The student had a test coming up the next day, so we took the time to work through the chapter in his textbook and do the exercises it provided. This included interpreting the period, frequency, velocity, and wavelengths from a word problem, and understanding how to use those values to calculate the others. We examined the importance of recognizing the units as well, and how they can be used to easily identify those characteristics of waves. Additionally, we discussed extensions and consequences of these wave properties in the forms of the Doppler effect, sonic booms, and comparing the speeds of light and sound in a given situation.

We went over the corrections that he had to make for his geometry test. We went over simplifying radicals together and made sure he made the correct corrections. He is a bright boy and is a fast learner. After the corrections, we went over free-fall problems in physics. He has a quiz on this material on Monday. We went over how to fill in the knowns and locating which kinematic equation to use to find the unknowns. Again, he showed fast learning ability and was able to do the problems well on his own.

Today we covered sound waves and how it relates to harmonics and standing waves because the student didn't understand the material when it was presented in class. In general, making more frequent use of her textbook as a backup will likely be helpful.

I discussed the concepts of vector multiplication and integral of even and odd functions. I went through the details of angular momentum of a rigid body. The student needed help to understand the concepts of 3D angular momentum, eigenvalue and eigenvector. At the end of the session, I clarified the concepts and we will meet next time to go into them on an even deeper level.

We covered several concepts in electromagnetism, including but not limited to Biot-Savart law, Ampere's law, Faraday's law, and Lenz's law. The student had a very positive attitude and seemed to be comfortable with the material covered by the end of the session. We discussed general strategies for approaching physics questions, such as drawing pictorial representations and stepwise thinking.
