We reviewed the concept and computation questions at the end of the chapter on Newton's Second Law. This includes force, acceleration, mass vs. weight, free fall, summing of forces, friction, and air resistance. The student has no problem with concepts. He is relentless in chasing the correct answers, and wants to excel with alacrity. He is also growing in confidence. I expect that as new concepts are raised, we will meet again to discuss them.

We reviewed rotational kinematics and friction forces before starting to look at energy and the conservation laws. We practiced drawing free body diagrams and summing up all of the forces in the x- and y-directions. We calculated the velocity of two different masses with different coefficients of friction as they slid down a grade 20 incline as well as the coefficient of friction for a car turning a corner with a bank of 8 degrees. We went over the equations for potential and kinetic energy and looked at how the total energy is the same in a system where there is no dissipating forces like friction or air resistance. We looked at simple pendulums and roller coasters to see the relationship between potential and kinetic energy at different points in the pendulum's swing or on the roller coaster track.

Today, I met the student for the first time. For this session, we worked on some online problems that he was working on in thermodynamics. Specifically, we were using the first law of thermodynamics, the ideal gas law, and the specific heat to find the heat in or out during a process or the work done on or by a gas during a process. The session went very well. Toward the end of the session, he felt more confident and was doing quite well. We will meet again next week.
