MCAT Tutoring review by Karen in Virginia
The student's teacher asked me to explain (how the earth's crust moved and causes earthquakes). I peeled an orange and explained that the orange represents the earth and the orange peel represents the earth's crust. The pieces of the orange peel represented the plates of crust. I tried to piece it back together telling him the plates move when they move, an earthquake takes place. I showed him on a globe how Africa used to fit into the Caribbean Sea and on down to South America. His globe showed ridges for mountains. I explained how the plates over lapped and shoved earth up along the coast to make mountains near the coasts. We looked at several continents to see this; He was fascinated. We read his reading assignment and he answered the comprehension questions very well. He also chose to read part of his book he brought. Since there was new vocabulary, he is now remembering how to pronounce new words after he sees them once or twice.

I told the student at the beginning of our lesson that if he wanted to go into the seventh grade this test and the material itself were extremely important and he did a great job of paying attention and giving his best effort.

The student completed most of a practice SAT test.  We spent the session reviewing the test. We reinforced geometry concepts and then worked in detail on the reading comprehension.  Managing time will be an important concept.  She agreed that flashcards would be productive for expanding her vocabulary.
