As you consider the options for your student's Indianapolis ISEE prep, reach out to Varsity Tutors. By matching your student to resources and instruction suited to their needs, we can help your student make the most of their preparation time. Because many Independent Schools use the ISEE as a part of their admissions decisions, studying well for this exam can make a difference for your student's academic career.
The ISEE consists of four levels, the Upper Level, the Middle Level, the Lower Level, and the Primary Level. The three highest levels are laid out with the same number of sections, the same time constraints, and the same number of questions. The questions that appear on the exam differ in the degree of difficulty based on the age of the student. The Primary Level has slightly different sections and a different layout.
What can my student study during Indianapolis ISEE prep?
The three highest levels of the ISEE consist of five sections which are Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Math Achievement, and the Essay. All sections except for the Essay section are in multiple-choice format. The Primary Level contains three levels (2, 3, and 4) and each level contains a Reading section, a Math section, and a Writing Sample. Level 2 also contains an Auditory Comprehension section. Let's do an overview of the sections of the ISEE. We will focus on the higher-level exams because the Primary Level exams involve more basic reading, math, and writing skills.
During the Verbal Reasoning section of the ISEE, students will have 40 minutes to answer 20 questions related to their ability to use English effectively. Students must possess age-appropriate vocabulary and be able to use context to infer information. At the Middle and Upper Levels, students must also have knowledge of Anglo-Saxon, Greek, and Latin word roots and knowledge of the parts of speech.
The Quantitative Reasoning section is focused on mathematical reasoning and understanding. This section deals less with mathematical operations, and more with mathematical thinking. Students at all levels must be able to estimate and display their ability to use numerical logic. Students will need to understand geometry, probability, and be able to do some mathematical operations that are suited to their age. There 37 questions in this section and students have 35 minutes to answer them.
The Reading Comprehension section involves questions that are based on the student's ability to read passages and understand the vocabulary, main ideas, and organizational structure of the piece. Students will need to be able to find information in the assigned passages, locate the main idea, and be able to use inferences to answer questions. This section has 36 questions, and there are 35 minutes assigned to complete this section.
During the Math Achievement section, students will have 40 minutes to answer 47 questions that deal will measurement, algebra, and problem-solving. Students must be able to work with decimals, percents, and fractions. They must also understand the order of operations, how to find area and perimeter of 2-D and 3-D objects, and solve equations.
The Essay allows the student to respond to a prompt that they have 30 minutes to complete. Students are given a prompt that is intended to be interesting to students of their particular age. Students must give an organized response that displays their knowledge of English grammar and usage conventions and their ability to use detail to make a piece more interesting.
At the Primary Level, sections are much shorter and feature basic skills such as vocabulary, math operations, and creative writing.
What can Indianapolis ISEE prep do to help my student prepare?
To help your student make the most of their preparation, there are two main options for their Indianapolis ISEE prep. For students that learn best in a group, an Indianapolis ISEE prep course is a great choice. However, some students learn best in smaller groups, and working with an Indianapolis ISEE tutor gives your student a chance to learn in a one-on-one environment. All offerings take place over the internet, which makes it easier for your student to attend and makes scheduling more convenient.
During an Indianapolis ISEE prep class, your student will meet with other students and their instructor in a virtual classroom. In addition to hearing live lectures from the skilled instructor, your student can also engage with and learn from the other students in the class. By having a chance to encounter the material in a number of ways, your student can retain and process the information more effectively. The instructor is able to modify the class time to suit the needs of the group, and you can schedule a time for your student to meet with the instructor outside of class for extra help as well.
There are sessions of Indianapolis ISEE prep classes that start every week, and you can choose between two and four-week sessions. Because there are sessions that meet at a variety of times, you can pick a session that suits your student's schedule as well as possible.
While working with an Indianapolis ISEE tutor, your student can experience learning that is focused on their needs. Their mentor can make a plan that helps them pursue their particular academic goals by focusing on the most important content. They can help your student absorb the material by presenting them with materials that suit their learning style. In addition to the content learning that takes place in these sessions, your student can learn about test-taking strategies that can help them move through the exam more effectively and confidently.

...I continue to use those skills and passions today by tutoring students. While I tutor a wide range of subjects, my passion lies in math. I love working with students that struggle with understanding basic concepts. I have seen students go from hating math because they do not understand it, to learning how to think like a mathmetician and love it. My philosophy is, every student can learn when presented with information in a way...

"I touch the future. I teach."... I am pretty animated, so first off I will say "When I talk, I use my hands a lot." I like to use pen and paper or an article that relates to the topic we are addressing; something new that is going on today that is relevant to something that they are going over in class. I use several examples of jumbled up sentences or scrambled sentences, missing one word or one grammar issue, and have them fix it. Tech-wise, the only social media I ever utilize is Pinterest, because I pin a lot of things like quotes and student-related stuff for study skills and learning how to jump a hurdle without lifting your legs for a metaphor.
