Today I helped the student with the reading assignment on schizophrenia. Together, we looked over the article, which was an informational booklet published by the National Institute of Mental Health. Then we reviewed the keys terms and concepts, including hallucination, delusions, paranoia, catatonia, tonic-clonic seizure, electroconvulsive therapy, first and second generation anti-psychotic medications, comorbidity, psychosocial and biological contributors to the disorder, and long-range prognosis.
The student received a 100 on her last paper! I am proud of her. Today we reviewed for her exam, finishing the last of the PowerPoints. We started working on the take home essay for the exam. She will write a draft for our session tomorrow.
Today's session was spent on two subjects. First, we worked on writing. We reviewed the student's proposal for a feasibility report, and made sure it met all the assignment requirements and that it was free from any grammatical or spelling errors. Next, we completed an outline and drafted a thesis for her feasibility report. With the writing work out of the way, we proceeded to work on psychology. We went over her paper about the portrayal of a psychiatric illness in the media, and then I proceeded to help her elaborate on a few key points overall. The session was quite productive.
We went over the first quarter of the multiple-choice questions of an AP test.
There was improvement on questions dealing with the "Big Five" personality traits.
I left him with the second half of a practice test.
No concerns.
Yesterday, the student and I went over the chapter on sensation and perception in more detail since last time we kind of sped through it. The student remembered much of the material from last time and was making connections to other examples, which was great. Next time we meet we'll go over chapter 5.
We continued work on the paper by formatting articles for the braille note, and I helped the student prepare a bibliography. We discussed the articles and the book at some length. She was to write up the paper upon my leaving the session.
