The student and I used online resources to attempt a number of single-blank completion problems. He is getting better at making guesses based on recognizing words with similar roots. He is also learning to eliminate the possibility of answers that fit the blank but that look too simple to be tested as vocabulary words. We also examined a math problem from a recent sample test that had seemed particularly baffling, as it involved calculating not only probability but area through laws of circles, squares, isosceles right triangles; and succeeded at clarifying and solving it!

We spent the time on math today, both SAT & ACT. We went over the Gauss shortcut to adding large sequences of numbers, along with the addendum that if you are adding up a sequence that has an odd number of figures, you must separate one of them and add it on later (otherwise it will not divide evenly into pairs). We also did some review of functions and how they are formed and how to apply them to problems that might occur. We reviewed the slope-intercept form of a function and how to identify the slope and y-intercept of an equation simply by sight. Lastly, we worked on trigonometry problems from the ACT, working on how to identify which trigonometric equation (sin/cos/tan) to use in which situation, and how to use algebra to solve for a remaining side or angle. We also looked at one problem that involved the graph of a trigonometric function, learning how to identify its period.

We started by recapping what we covered last time: Chapter 5 in the SAT prep book. Then we talked about the student's introduction to the prompt I supplied from last session. I'd like her to write a whole essay between now and our next session, or we will do a timed write and then go over the essay together. She has been using vocabulary books to study as well. We then went over Chapter 6: Passage-based Reading. This included going over some strategies as well as learning how to recognize the different types of questions she will see. We concluded by completing the sample questions and going over the explanations. I was pleased with her performance on this section and have asked her to complete the practice problems from the end of this chapter for us to go over at our next session.
