Session Summaries by History Tutors

History Tutoring review by Andrea in Grayslake, IL
The student and I resumed studying the chapters for his makeup exam. We continued utilizing the strategy we developed last weekend of reading the chapter reviews aloud and having him answer questions to show his comprehension. Afterwards, we reviewed the notes taken on all the chapters and reviewed the chapters we studied last weekend. He demonstrated good recall of the previous chapters. We elaborated on the chapter notes so he can review them again before the test. I have encouraged the student to have a family member read his written Chapter Summaries back to him as they contain additional information that may be on the exam, and he seems to remember so much more when he hears information than when he reads it.

History Tutoring review by Rudy in Grayslake, IL
The student and I finished reviewing her second practice exam in this session. We went through the reading and science, which were some of her strongest scores on this exam. We didn't really have too many questions to go over. She then wrong her essay for the exam, of which I scored a 9-10, and I gave her some tips on how to make it a little stronger. We then concluded by reviewing some trig. I had the student reconstruct the unit circle with as many points as she could remember. Overall, she is doing great. She will take another exam this weekend so that we could review that next week.

History Tutoring review by Karen in Grayslake, IL
We started with the student's geography homework. He read and answered questions very well. This is supposed to be one of his problem areas. Then we finished Please Don't Feed the Tiger Lily, Marley's Big Adventure and Star Wars the Clone Wars-Yoda in Action. The Star Wars book was more difficult with a lot of new vocabulary from the movie. He had some minor issues but stuck with sounding out words and reading. He liked the book and wanted to finish.

In this session, the student worked on writing chemical reactions, given the starting materials, and determined the type of reaction.  We also practiced making charts to help balance these equations.  Lastly, we went over the topic of formal charge and practiced finding the charge on different atoms.

Finished reviewing the formulas and principles covered in the Math section. Student took a time-adjusted prep; he scored very well. Further Math review will address time management and greater care in calculation, though his mastery of formulas is at a good level. Moved on to the Science section, and the student demonstrated a good understanding of its nature as a logical/critical thinking test. He needed little comprehension prompting to correctly answer questions on the scientific viewpoint subsection. Finally, we started basic grammar (English section) before the session ended.
