Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we went over a few more questions from the aptitude test, especially math and biology. We went over a few problems and then I gave the student a few practice problems to work on that are similar to the ones we went over. She did pretty amazing with only a few errors. I taught her how to recognize difficult problems and skip them to save more time on the test. I also emphasized "guesstimating" as well as simplifying fractions and ratios to save time. For biology, she bought a study guide for review to supplement her practice questions. We went over the fluid mosaic model of the plasma membrane, some basic scientific method concepts, and finally chemistry. I gave her a few pages to read and we will continue tomorrow."
"The student and I continued to prepare for his upcoming exam by discussing the second chapter he was assigned. In this chapter, we discussed the history of astronomy and the keeping of astronomical data through the ages. We went over Kepler's three laws of planetary motion (as well as the current modified forms), Newton's three laws (all of which deal with force), and Newton's law of gravitation. From this, we saw the equation used for the gravitational force and the derivation of the equation for escape velocity. Once we completed the general outline of the chapter, we began to work some problems dealing with gravity (i.e. finding acceleration due to gravity at different heights above the Earth). This was a multi-step problem and involved some math that he struggled with. We are covering a large chunk of material in order to catch him up, and I am trying to move efficiently enough through it to cover it in time while still having him be able to understand and commit the material to memory. During our next session, while continuing to cover previous material, I will include more of these problems to get him back in the habit of being able to complete these successfully."
"We went over the student's snow day packet involving reaction rates, equilibria, and color tests. We covered multiple problems that had to do with ICE diagrams and identifying ions from their reactive properties. We also covered Redox reactions. The student seems to have a good grasp of the material."
"The student and I covered the skeletal system. He learns well by affiliating the subject with soccer. He is very intelligent and picks up the material quickly. He just needs me to explain and clarify his class notes. Repetition and mock tests are great study tools for him."
"We went over body planes, directions, and anatomical terms and started on bones. The student did well and needs to practice proximal vs distal and left vs right in terms of the anatomical position. He was directed to my Google+ page for a quiz and online tools. I also assigned reading from the textbook he has. He was very engaged and picked up all the material quickly."
"Concepts covered today included medical terminology general concepts and anatomy general concepts. The student was very cooperative."
