Algebra Tutor • +24 Subjects

My tutoring style is structured on the principle that not every person learns the same way. It's not always how you were taught the material, but how it was received. If it was never received and learned by the student, they were never taught.I teach Sciences (chemistry, biology), and Math and have an Arizona Department of Education Substitute Teaching Certificate. I have my Master's in Forest Resources but I tell everyone it's in Wood Chemistry. I enjoy the challenge of solving problems and I have used that as my basis for careers I have chosen. Here is a little of my Philosophy of Teaching.....Learning is, of course, the main purpose of education. I feel that the concept of learning should be molded around three steps. First, learn and understand the material presented. Second, independent thought is essential to the development of every student. Being able to form unique independent ideas to solve problems is the next step in the formal learning process. Finally, the use of learned concepts in new situations is essential for the student to prove understanding. By using understood information, students should be able to apply what they have learned to new situations presented to them by the teacher and in the future, by life. Transfer of this sort is what really determines what has been absorbed and will stick with the student for a lifetime.Learning can be fun. Select me as your tutor and you will find out how and why.

10th Grade Reading Tutor • +35 Subjects

I am a recent graduate of the University of Arizona where I earned a B.A. studying Creative Writing, Spanish Language and Literature, and English Literature. From 2010 to 2012 I worked at the University of Arizona Think Tank, a free tutoring service provided to UA students that is staffed by undergraduates. Tutoring at the Writing Center, I worked with many diverse students ranging from non-native speakers of English to graduate students applying for research grants. Throughout my years at the Think Tank, I became a CRLA Level 3 Certified Tutor, mentoring younger tutors and leading training sessions.During the spring of 2011, I studied abroad in Alcala de Henares, Spain, a city in the municipality of Madrid. There I lived with a host family and was fully enriched by the beautifully rich Spanish culture; nothing could have been better for my acquisition skills than such a true immersion experience, and I advocate such programs for students who wish to learn foreign languages. My true passion is writing - I recently completed a poetry thesis for the Honors College of the University of Arizona. I believe English literature, language, and grammar skills are immensely important, and I hope to bring my knowledge of tutoring in those areas to you students at Varsity!

ACT Math Tutor • +20 Subjects

I am a graduate of Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. I obtained my Bachelor of Science Degree in Geological Sciences, and also attended Graduate classes while enrolled there. Additionally, I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Sciences from American Sentinel University in Birmingham, Alabama. I have tutored students on many occasions in a variety of subjects. My strengths, however, lie in math and science. I have worked with students of varying ages, from grade school through high school level. My greatest satisfaction is working with a student when they 'get it', understanding a concept that had been confusing or uncertain. While this can be gradual or sudden, you can really see it when it makes sense. I also enjoy helping students prepare for Standardized Tests. My goal is to help them advance, while keeping the material interesting. It is also my hope that I can help students reduce the stress they may feel when preparing to take these tests. I believe that if you continue to learn throughout your life, you will always be growing. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, and just about anything to do with water - swimming, sailing and scuba diving. I am an avid scuba diver (PADI Certified Scuba Diving Instructor #68581). I have been diving in Hawaii, California, and multiple places in the Caribbean, to name a few. When I can train, I like to distance swim. In April 2012, I swam from Alcatraz to San Francisco, as well as the length of the Golden Gate Bridge.

ACT English Tutor • +24 Subjects

I believe education is a dynamic relationship where both the student and teacher learn valuable skills. The students learn applicable skills and strategies while the teachers learn how to better educate students based on each student's personality. My experiences range from teaching college football players mathematics and writing, to teaching first graders how to read full sentences in children's books. My wide range of experience with varying age groups makes me a perfect tutor for any age group. I specialize in accommodating students based on their learning style and teaching them in the way they learn best. This helps the student be as successful as possible and helps me become a better teacher for every student.

Accounting Tutor • +16 Subjects

Hello! I am a MS Finance Graduate with and Undergrad in Psychology, bit of an odd combination, I know. I first started tutoring when I was in Middle School with a student that cut a deal with the teacher Korn will play at school dances if he went up a letter grade. Needless to say he succeeded and got his wish and since then I have tutored on and off.I decided to join Varsity Tutors because I want to continue helping people closely one on one and get the rush when a student finally has Eureka! moment. I currently am a business owner and I have a rather diverse path corporate, intern at a fund-of-funds & incubator, worked in two psychology research laboratories (Social Learning Lab & Neuroscience Memory Lab), and was a line therapist for children with autism. My background lends itself for me to have a varied perspective. Working with children with autism gave me skills to adapt to many different learning methods and challenged me to think of all possible approaches to teach a lesson or skill. As for my spare time, I like to play sports, watch sports, play video games, hike, watch movies, read, cook, traveling, and learn random skills.
