Session Summaries by Languages Tutors

Languages Tutoring review by Chantal in Phoenix, AZ
Excellent session with full participation of all family members. We reviewed the materials from the previous sessions and the retention was very high. The subjects included greetings, the colors, counting, going to the grocery store, fruits, vegetables, drinks, the city, the seasons, and clothing. We also worked on listening, safety and culture in Paris, useful tips and practical means of communication. The new material included sports, activities, action words, and moving around in Paris. We concluded the session with a story that I composed that dealt with the vocabulary discussed so far and a few new vocabulary words. Everyone listened intently and were able to express some of the words they heard as well as present the story line. Excellent session. Next session will include role playing.

Languages Tutoring review by Carolyn in Phoenix, AZ
Today was our first session, and I think it went well. We went over the ideas and goals that the student has in mind for his French studies this summer. Today we went over the ideas behind grammar, syntax, and parts of speech. We reviewed basic language concepts in order to more prepare him for learning a language. We finished our lesson with a brief foray into greetings and the basic verbs to be, to have, to go, and to want.

Languages Tutoring review by Maureen in Phoenix, AZ
During this session, the student and I worked on strengthening his ability to write sentences. I introduced some new material about definite articles and adjectives, mostly related to agreement, titles, and addresses. This material was a little abstract and hard to grasp, but by the end of the session, the student was able to correctly answer 8/10 questions without support. We also incorporated questioning strategies (how to ask a question in French), including "Est-ce que," inversion, and adding a question mark to the end of a declarative statement. We also reviewed ne...pas. For homework, the student will complete two exercises in the Schaum's book and practice the -er verbs he needs to memorize.

The student had a review packet to go over in preparation for an upcoming quiz. We covered a great deal in a short time period, including possessive adjectives, verb conjugations (regular and irregular), quel, tout, vocabulary (e.g., colors, school supplies, objects found around the home).

Today we moved on to lesson 1B. The student breezed through it and the section of the workbook, so we made it through all of lesson 1C as well. She is catching on very quickly, even with the numbers, which can be very difficult!

Languages Tutoring review by Catherine in Phoenix, AZ
After some informal conversation, most of the session was spent discussing negating sentences. This included the necessary phrases and when to use them, particularly when dealing with different verb tenses.
