Elementary Math Tutoring review by Angela in Virginia
I left the student a math test over the weekend. I graded it today and she only missed 1 out of 27. We went onto the warm up. Then I taught her fourth-grade math, including part/whole for fractions and how to convert decimals to fractions. I also taught her how to find area and perimeter of shapes. This session was good.

We finished working through our questions from the summer, except for one problem. It's similar to the test question we skipped, so the student is going to present both questions to her teacher. Before taking the assessment, the student needs to find a list of math concepts and make sure she's familiar with them, but her much more rigorous math training will serve her well on the test.

First we reviewed factoring by pairs, factoring polynomials, and factoring quadratics. Today's new learning was factoring quadratics with a coefficient greater than one and using the foil method to check work.

Today we refined the student's ability to multiply, add, or subtract larger numbers. I also gave him a times table to memorize/work on. The times table consisted of numbers 1 - 13. He was able to add/subtract larger numbers (such as up to the ten thousands place, great progress).

The student and I covered some practice problems that gave her trouble. There weren't any particular areas of struggle; just a little piece here and there. She has her exam on Saturday and I am sure she will continue to study and practice for it!

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Giselle in Virginia
We covered concepts of the decimals chapter that will be in the student's test tomorrow. We revised multiplication patterns by powers of 10, decimal multiplication, estimation of products, problem solving and the use of decimal models to find a product. We worked on a test preparation worksheet, as well as on her textbook review chapter exercises. The use of manipulatives to understand the multiplication by powers of 10 was effective (e.g. post its as number cards). The student got 91% correct answers in the worksheet. She had a great attitude towards the material reviewed, and even asked for more challenges. She has improved her test taking skills, with a better use of time when working on her answers. She was encouraged to finish practicing the use of visual models to find products.
