I am currently a junior mathematics major at the University of Portland. I am originally from Seattle, where I attended Lakeside School. I tutor most subjects in middle and high school math, and also work with students to prepare for SAT mathematics. This year I have volunteered at a high school in North Portland as a writing tutor as well as a math and science tutor. Previous to that, I have assisted dorm residents at UP in college mathematics courses. I first started teaching while at the University of Florida. While attending UF I taught SCUBA classes to my fellow students. Later I went on to teach adults at a private dive school. Throughout my career I have taught seasonal staff up to CFO's various accounting and finance skills. While attending Montana State University I was selected to be a graduate teaching assistant, where I kept office hours for all accounting courses. During my last job I taught the new associates various software and tax topics. While learning business concepts I believe it is very important to see the big picture. It can be very easy to get lost in the details of calculations, but its important to understand how everything fits together. When not working I enjoy sailing all around the Seattle area as well as hiking. I also spend a good deal of time trying to learn my fiddle.

My research focused on Latin American literature, and as part of my master's I completed coursework in Spanish, French, and English. I earned a B.A. in History, Comparative Literature, and European Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While in college, I spent a year at the University of Seville in Spain. As a tutor and teacher, my first goal is to tap into my students' curiosity and show them how what they are studying gives them access to another world besides their own. I also love to see the process of learning a new language at the early stages, which is often when a student begins to think critically about language for the first time. When I'm not working or reading, I try to travel as much as I can. I grew up partly in Costa Rica, studied in Spain, and worked in France. More recently, I have spent time in Mexico, Portugal, and Panama. Closer to home, I like hiking, spending time with friends, family, and pets, as well as learning to cook new things. I was once an avid soccer fan and am trying to get back into it now that I'm done with graduate school.

I graduated from the University of Washington, Seattle in 2013 with the B.S. degree in Biochemistry and a minor degree in Mathematics. Earlier in my career, I was planning to pursue my career in the medical field or laboratory research since I appreciate the knowledge of science and medicine very much. However, after being experienced into many fields for several years, both during college years and years after, I realized that I am more passion toward doing business and providing education. As of now, I am tutoring/teaching part-time for about 15-25 hours a week, meanwhile helping my family doing restaurant business. I am planning to go to graduate school for business degree and hopefully continue doing tutoring/teaching at the same time. The long term goal is to open my own businesses in either or both food and education to share my dreams and passions with the community.Helping students to become successful has been one of my biggest passions. I enjoy being part of the students' lives to learn their overall career goals, then help guiding them to the right direction both academically and outside the school. It takes more than just getting good grades in order to maximize the students' potentials although grades and standardized test scores are the top two important factors that most of top ranking schools are looking for from the students. Therefore, my priority of helping student is always ensuring that the students understand what they are learning first so they can do well in class and perform well in standardized tests. In additional to this priority, I also like to share my experiences and knowledge with students to help motivate them to understand why learning all these subjects is important to their career. Once the students are more interested in what they are learning, they tend to learn better and do better in their classes.

There are few achievements more satisfying than finally conquering a new concept or skill, which at the start seemed daunting and impossible. Tutoring allows one to share in that satisfaction of the successes of the student. My part-time tutoring in college helped me realize this, and has inspired me to pursue a career helping others on their journey to knowledge.I will do everything I can to help my students achieve success. I am confident in my knowledge, my skills, and my ability to impart that knowledge to others. Perhaps more importantly, I am never ashamed to admit the limits of my knowledge. In those cases, I can nearly always learn for myself, and help the student to learn too.
