Credentials:Associate in Arts and Sciences Degree: World LanguagesEverett Community CollegeBachelor Of Arts: SpanishUniversity of IdahoExperience Tutoring/Teaching:During my time in high school I spent several hours teaching in a classroom setting to kids of various ages from Pre-K to seniors in high school in order to complete a hefty community service requirement mandated by the school board for graduation. These activities included learning through games, flashcards, group activities, solo projects, one on one interactions, as well as the entire classroom as a whole. Due to the various age groups that I have worked with I fully understand that not every student learns in the same way and as a tutor/instructor I have to adjust to their educational needs as necessary. I have had success teaching a range of subjects using numerous methods in order to ensure that the student is getting the most out of their studies.Experience with Spanish:-Began studying freshman year of high school (all four years of high school)-Worked with several ONLY Spanish speaking employees on a daily basis (2007-Present)-Spanish interpreter for a tax filing agency (Jan 2016-Present)-Spent final semester of college in Costa Rica for a study abroad program-Major: SpanishReasons for Tutoring:I have found that my love for languages has gone past the walls of the classroom and even my personal interest in using them as a profession. I believe that even knowing just enough of another foreign language is enough to broaden one's horizon and experience more of the world around them. Whether a student is taking a foreign language class as a requirement, an elective, or simply because there was no other option there is so much that can be retained from that experience. My goal is to help every student learn, understand, and appreciate the value of the subject matter that they are studying so that it can benefit them outside the classroom as it has me. I am fully confident in my knowledge and experience with the subject matter that I am able and will to be tutoring at all levels.

As a non-heritage speaker, I understand all the difficulties that students may have in acquiring the language (I've been there) and I have the tools / tricks to make my students successful. But I also know the importance of knowing Spanish in the modern world. Let me help.

College English Tutor • +7 Subjects

I am a graduate of the Wake Forest University School of Law in North Carolina where I obtained my Juris Doctorate Degree. I also received an bachelor's degree in communications from Brigham Young University. I greatly enjoy working with students who are trying to improve their academic performance. I have previously instructed online developmental writing courses for adults seeking to return to college and sought to improve their writing skills. I believe strongly that everyone has the talent needed to write and express themselves but that they need to learn how to structure and organize their writing so that their ideas can flow. For standardized testing I believe the most important factor in success is becoming comfortable with the test itself; learning the common ways the test makers misdirect a student’s attention and how to properly break down a problem. Outside of the classroom I have a great interest in film; I own hundreds of movies from various genres, eras, and countries. I also write fiction in my spare time.

I am a process chemist and chemical engineer with over a dozen years working in the chemical industry for companies like ExxonMobil and Shell. I graduated from Caltech with a Bachelor's of Science in Chemical Engineering. While at Caltech, I discovered my love for chemistry, so I decided to shift to chemistry for graduate school. That is why I earned a Ph.D. in chemistry at UC Berkeley: because I think chemistry is fun. While some would consider Caltech and UC Berkeley to be "elite" schools based on their rankings, I am no elitist. I think everyone should have the opportunity to get the best education they possibly can, and tutoring (with me, of course) is an efficient, cost-effective way to help make it happen.I love to teach folks science and math, especially chemistry. I live for the moments when I guide someone through a subject until something "clicks" in their mind. Learning science is learning how to see the world around us with fresh eyes. For example, after studying thermodynamics at Caltech, I started thinking about every day phenomena from an analytical standpoint: things like boiling a pot of water or washing something in soapy water suddenly became much more interesting.I have three semesters of experience as a TA/graduate student instructor: one semester teaching organic chemistry and two teaching the graduate-level X-ray crystallography course. While at ExxonMobil, I led several chemistry-related training courses for technical folks like engineers and other chemists.Sometimes I can get a little animated when I'm interested in the subject matter. Excitement can be contagious, and I find students are a little more engaged when I nerd out about the lesson of the day.
