The student and I spent time preparing for her final exam in Math. We worked on the problems in the practice webwork that her teacher gave her. We specifically focused on how to find zeros of functions graphically and algebraically. We also spent time practicing solving inequalities that had absolute values in them, and getting used to writing domains in formal notions using parenthesis and square brackets. We did a couple of trig problems looking at reference angles and finding the area of non-right triangles.
Great first session! We got our feet wet with developing a common vocabulary and determining grade-level appropriate exercises. I'd like to focus on examining school assignments before creating any outside work specifically designed for our tutoring sessions.
We started our session talking about vowels and consonants -- The student remembered all the vowels from our last session! We then worked on some more sight words, and she did great both reading words she knew and sounding out words she didn't. We finished up our session by writing the numbers 1-50. Her penmanship is getting much better in general, and especially when it comes to numbers, which we haven't practiced as much. She is doing great and improving each week!
Discuss the progress of handwriting. Taught him the finger rule and way to gauge the area. Number recognition with objects and without. Able to counts shapes and name with some help. Tried alphabet recognition of all 26 letters.
Topics covered include graphing functions, finding horizontal/vertical asymptotes, x and y intercepts, domain, range, and graph transformations. Theorems regarding synthetic division, completing the square, and solving for polynomials were included. Understanding of all components of a function's graph, completing the square, and polynomials were achieved.
The student had begun a practice test for the placement test, so we continued the work that he had started. He is very weak in vocabulary, which is difficult to improve when you only have a week, so I suggested that he use a vocabulary or flashcard app or website to familiarize himself with more words. We began covering test prep strategies and the math sections. His homework was to complete the rest of the practice test before Sunday.
