Usually a student is doing poorly in a subject because they do not have confidence in the material. The best place to start in tutoring any subject is helping students believe that they can conquer the subject matter in front of them by guiding them towards the correct solutions, but letting them figure out the actual answer.

In my second session with the student we spent most of the time (after going through his homework sections) going through the techniques and tools for the Critical Reading sections- the importance of annotation and underlining the passages, identifying transition words, how to approach the Sentence Completions, etc.), and doing practice items together from Test #2.
The student and I finished reviewing his practice ACT Reading, Science, and Writing sections today. The student did very well on the Reading and Science tests, and his few mistakes were easy to address. I have assigned another Writing prompt for the student to do before he goes on vacation next week.
Covered 4 types of deceptive answers and practiced with them. The student is strong with this. Practiced science tips. The student is strong in reading. We practiced graph passages.
Completed an entire SAT test from the prep book. The student had his best performance to date, answering quickly and accurately. He's retained all the concepts from earlier sessions and, consequently, has greater confidence. He is omitting very few questions and using elimination to make educated guesses when he is unsure. The student has continued to study vocabulary and is doing well on the synonym questions, too.
We worked on a critical reading section, 2 math sections and one sentence correction section. The student did the best on the latter, and has made excellent progress there. I need to target the sentence completion section and look for ways to improve the student's progress there.
We worked on reviewing one English passage that the student had completed prior to our meeting and then we worked on one math section and one writing section together. The student's scores on long passages are improving and he got a perfect score on one this time.
