Today, we worked on the English portion of the test, specifically tense agreements and vocabulary questions. She did super well. While she isn't too keen on it, next time, we're going to do a mix of English and Math, as well.

Today's session was the first in which the student and I did not focus on a single subject the entire time. We spent the majority of the session going over the English section of the diagnostic test that he had just taken. He did very well on the English section, only missing a few questions when he initially took the test, and upon review he fully understood all of his mistakes. And for the remaining time in today's session, he and I worked through the first half of another diagnostic math test, of which he was very capable of doing almost every question.

Today's session went well, but I think we will need to begin meeting more often. I think that we need to do more practice (about two sections a day, with his own review of mistakes) to truly benefit from taking all of those practice exams. We're getting closer and closer to the exam date, but we need some graded exams to be able to see if he's improving. I know that he is motivated, but I do see that he's nervous about his answers. I'm hoping to continue working on coping with not understanding questions throughout the week, and we will work through reading and math sections on Thursday.

Tonight we practiced math. We started off with a quiz to review concepts from last session. The student scored 100% on the problems she completed. We then looked at a past math section and worked through the more time consuming problems. Lastly, she completed a partial exam. I will send the remainder of that exam via email, and we'll begin next session with reviewing that.

Tonight we went through some passages from the ACT Reading so I could get a sense of places where she is struggling. When she did not know what a word meant, we made a note of it and started a bank of words with definitions for her to refer to. We answered some practice problems from the humanities and natural science categories, beginning to talk about some ways to find the right answers on certain types of questions.

Tonight, the student and I reviewed the math section of the ACT. We went over types of questions she would see, and then went over representative sample questions. I gave her some time-saving tips, such as stand in, plug and chug, word problem chunking, special triangles, and ballparking, and talked about when to use them. During this problem set, I asked her which of the concepts she would like more practice with, and then gave her practice problems. Outside of tutoring, she is still reading 20 minutes a day and doing 10-20 problems a day. Tonight, I will send her a second reading, The Yellow Wallpaper, and the ACT book math test to review. I will also be breaking up the previous official ACT diagnostic tests to serve as problem sets.
