Session Summaries by Tutors

Hill Air Force Base, UT tutoring
Today we reviewed rules with exponents, such as how to multiply and divide variables raised to a power. She struggled a little bit with remembering that when two terms are being divided, you subtract the bottom exponent from the top exponent to simplify them. Overall though, she did great with all the problems I asked her to do from sections 7.1 through 7.3 in her book. I also asked her to do some tough word problems from each session. These were more difficult - most of them involved transforming a large, ugly number into a smaller number raised to a power of ten. This was something new for her, but we got some good practice with it. Occasionally, she made simple mistakes, but she recognized them quickly when I started to point them out. I think she'll be well prepared for the quiz on Wednesday!

Today, we worked on linear equations and systems of equations. The student solved several problems involving real-world scenarios using problem solving skills and algebraic reasoning. She does a fantastic job at looking at each problem as a whole, understanding the problem, and working through it logically in her head, instead of automatically applying a written mathematical process. I believe by solving the problems we have been working on, her mathematical confidence will continue to grow.
