Recent Greenwich REGENTS Tutoring Session Notes

REGENTS Tutoring review by Adam in Greenwich, CT
For this week, the student completed his first full-length practice test. He scored around 2050, which is a few hundred points better than his first SAT. I was pleased to see that he made the most improvement in the critical reading section, where he scored a 730! We reviewed the types of problems in each section that he got wrong and looked closely for patterns. Identifying sentence errors in the writing section and passage based reading questions that ask about context were two of the types of questions that he got wrong, so we will focus on these question types in our future sessions. We then went over the math questions that he had answered incorrectly or skipped. This math section was a bit harder than previous ones. We went over the problems he missed, and I showed him that they're not much different from the other math problems we've been working on. We continued to cover more math topics such as permutations/combinations, exponents, and series. For next week, he will complete one section each of writing, reading, and math.

REGENTS Tutoring review by Laura in Greenwich, CT
The student and I had an excellent final session preparing her for her SAT exam this Saturday. She had done a few practice problems prior to our meeting (math and writing) so we started with these. She tends to do much better on the math section than English sections, but she had encountered quite a few problems working through questions on her own. We worked together through a section and a half of mathematics problems, focusing on strategies that will help her succeed on whatever problems she encounters. She feels comfortable with certain types of problems (esp. algebra), but struggles to start on problems that she can't immediately see how to solve. We started by reviewing key terms (integer, real number, consecutive) and concepts (the ratio -- use one of two methods to solve, exponents) that will probably appear on the test. Next, we developed a strategy for her to jump into problems that initially look intimidating: 1) read the question, 2) identify the quantity/ thing searched for, 3) look at the information given and write down the information you have, and 4) synthesize the information to find the answer. As we turned to the "write-in" answers (for which there is no penalty for mistakes!), the student clearly began to take ownership of this section and to see a way forward. The key to her success here will be to focus on the problems that she definitely knows how to answer FIRST, and then to move on to questions that are more difficult for her. She was very engaged throughout our discussion, and she found the questions extremely easy once she got going -- the trick is just to make sure she knows how to start. The trick is to ensure that she is able to jump into problems on her own and see a way forward. We emphasized the importance of confidence, and she seemed pleased to see how capable she was -- with a little initial push -- of solving these questions. In our final time, we turned to the reading section, working on sentence completion. She has gotten excellent at questions with two blanks, but struggles more when there is just one -- she has trouble predicting the answer, although we've discussed the importance of finding the match between content in the text and the word. Her reading comprehension has improved quite a lot, but she still distrusts her elimination method. In two of four problems, she hesitated at the last moment, and narrowly missed the correct answer. We discussed how she can double-check to make sure that her answer is supported by details from the text and make sure the answer is TRUE (even if it is vague). Finally, we discussed general strategies for keeping herself sane, before and during the test. I think she has made definite progress since our sessions began and I hope that she sees improvement on this test! With more time, we could certainly strengthen her performance further. For now: Good luck!

REGENTS Tutoring review by Ted in Greenwich, CT
Our main focus for today's session was the mathematics portion of the SAT. The student seemed to quickly get a good grasp of the majority of the questions that were covered. As usual, he was left with material to work on for our following class. Next week we will focus on the reading passages and logical sections.

I focused on weak areas in student's testing. I addressed quantitative reasoning and examined parts of the reading comprehension section he missed. We will conduct final review of these sections tomorrow.

REGENTS Tutoring review by Kristina in Greenwich, CT
Today, we started with some listening practice for review. The student listened to three different audio recordings and answered the accompanying questions. She did very well with this section. We then reviewed the writing information that we went over the previous night and the student practiced writing an integrated essay and an independent essay. As she was doing each, I prepared additional activities for her to practice and corrected and went over her essay samples with her. She has made great improvements in her essay writing and seems to be feeling much more confident about the topic now. For the last half hour, the student practiced a reading passage and questions to review. She did not do as well on this practice exam as she had done with others but she was also rushing. Therefore, for homework tonight, the student will complete two sections of reading passages on her own for extra practice. She will also write another practice essay. Tomorrow will be our last session before the exam. We will spend one hour reviewing the speaking section one more time and one hour covering any other remaining questions and areas for review.
