Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

We've helped thousands of learners of all ages improve their reading and English skills including teaching English as a second language.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

Reading Tutoring review by Jacquelyn in Deerfield Beach, FL
Student A and I began our session with her practicing handwriting and she did very well when focusing. I've noticed that her overall handwriting has improved greatly when we did our sentence starter worksheet. We spent the last half of the session working on reading comprehension where she showed more improvement with understanding the concept of The Big Bad Wolf, which was a story she struggled with a few weeks ago. She's also able to form some of her own answers for what she remembers reading. Student B and I worked on her reading comprehension to see what level she is on. Third grade was very easy for her and she did well on fourth grade, but fifth grade was a struggle because of the vocabulary. She could recall the story but the vocabulary was difficult for her, so she's right where she's supposed to be for comprehension: fourth grade. We will be going over vocabulary words next time while continuing to practice reading and writing skills.

Reading Tutoring review by Cindy in Deerfield Beach, FL
The student chose to read from his religion text first. He was able to articulate his beliefs for the written prompt. His spelling homework was done very effectively. He gladly brainstormed prior to writing, and therefore, there were stronger more succinct sentences. We also discussed diphthongs and the patterns in his word list. Next, he completed his math homework. He followed word problem strategies without prompting. Next, we did math word problems I brought. We ended with text dependent questions about avalanches. He was reluctant at first but enjoyed the topic and used the text to support answers.

The student did his homework today, which was easy for him. He had to look at pictures and circle the word that described what the pictures showed. Then, he wanted me to read a book to him that was above his level. I let him say the easier words. He reads mostly by sight and does well to sound out letters and groups phonetically. I want to continue reading books on his level to rebuild his confidence. We talked about planting seeds and watching them grow, so we will make a project out of that with reading in the coming weeks.

Reading Tutoring review by Meredith in Deerfield Beach, FL
We covered the student's spelling and vocabulary words for the week. The spelling words all contained the "oo" sound, but spelled either with one o, two os, or "ew." By the end of the session she seemed to have grasped the concept. We also worked on a reading comprehension passage about triangles, which served the dual purpose of teaching her some math as well as reading.

Reading Tutoring review by Margaret in Deerfield Beach, FL
The student and I brainstormed ideas for tonight's task of writing an essay based on the Percy Jackson book, The Lightning Thief. She had read the first four chapters of this story, enough that we were able to skip right to the legend, myth, and fairy tale essay. Through the use of a matrix, she identified the characteristics of each genre and provided examples to cite in her writing. She needed some help with the introduction/conclusion but did very well otherwise. She can recognize the form of a story like Percy Jackson and then see the similarities between the books she has read and those that appear in Greek mythology. Our next session will center on completing several comprehension checks for Chapters 4-8 of The Lightning Thief, which she has agreed to read.

The student informed me that his paper for Sports Marketing is due on Wednesday. He said that he had received some help from his teacher, and that he wanted to continue working on it during our session. He came up with a lot of great ideas for his paper. I provided minor prompts to help him develop his ideas, and he did very well! He finished everything except the reference list. I reminded him to take some time to re-read it and to use spell check. At the end of our session, his father asked me about working with the student on study skills during our next session since exams are coming up. During our next session, I will try to get a better idea of his upcoming exams.
