Session Summaries by Physical Chemistry Tutors

Physical Chemistry Tutoring review by Hunter in Salt Lake City, UT
The student and I reviewed for her quiz this week. We covered states of matter, the relationship between pressure and temperature and the ideal gas laws. By talking through sample problems and structuring her answers together, the student gained a clear and thorough method of addressing these questions that she can use in class.

Physical Chemistry Tutoring review by Stephanie in Salt Lake City, UT
During this session, we went over the homework I left the student with from the last session. She clearly has a much better understanding of acids/bases at this point. We covered solubility for the rest of the session, and she felt more comfortable with this topic than acids/bases. With the test coming up on Tuesday, I left her with a few review problems over both acids/bases, titration, and solubility, which we will go over at the next session.

Physical Chemistry Tutoring review by Alana in Salt Lake City, UT
We started reviewing for the student's chemistry final while we also reviewed for her test on the mole that is on Tuesday. For all of the material that involves the mole, she does an excellent job. She can convert moles to grams and vice versa, and she can find the percent composition, empirical formula, and molecular formula of a compound. The only thing that she is having trouble with is understanding what the question is asking her. All of these questions are worded slightly differently each time. Once she understands what the question is asking her, she has no problem answering it. The only thing we can do is keep practicing the problems until she becomes more comfortable with different types of questions.

Physical Chemistry Tutoring review by Sophia in Salt Lake City, UT
Since I last saw the student, she has done titrations and also started thermo. We started working on thermodynamics and thermochem together. We covered how to use Hess's law, both for manipulating the steps of an equation and for using heats of formations. We also covered S and delta G and talked about the meaning of their signs and how they relate to both phase changes and spontaneity of chemical reactions.

Physical Chemistry Tutoring review by Teshome in Salt Lake City, UT
Today, the subject of discussion was electrochemistry. We discussed how to balance electrochemical (redox) reaction using the half-reaction method. We discussed how to balance reactions in acidic and basic solution and discussed how to balance redox reactions when there are mixed oxidation states in one formula. In addition, we discussed how to calculate standard electrode potential from reduction tables and determined whether reactions are spontaneous or not. We solved a number of problems during the discussion. She did a good job in understanding of redox reactions except for minor errors.
