Born in Indonesia and having studied in China, I now reside in the beautiful Pacific Northwest as a father of two. With a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, I currently work as a software developer for an EdTech startup. My passion for STEM and world languages being a native Mandarin speaker, fluent in Bahasa Indonesia, and conversational in French enhances my teaching approach. With over 5 years of teaching experience, particularly in Mathematics, I focus on fostering a growth mindset in my students. I believe in cultivating an environment where improvement is prioritized over arbitrary scores, and I am excited to support students with diverse learning goals.

Currently, I am pursuing a master's degree in speech-language pathology at Teachers College, Columbia University. In the past, I have worked as a teacher's aide in a public school classroom, a mentor to middle school girls, an instructor and tutor at the literacy education organization 826, and a summer camp counselor. I tutor a diverse range of subjects, and I find that I especially enjoy tutoring language arts, reading, and writing at all levels, from elementary school all the way up to college/grad school test prep. I have been tutoring K12 students math and language arts and GRE test preparation for 7 years. My favorite subject is the GRE test prep and Mandarin Chinese. My tutoring is based on student capabilities and tailored to their age differences. I like to read and listen to audio books, I love young children of different ages. Cooking and baking is my another hobby. Sometimes I enjoy to cook together with my children, or play video games like Minecraft with them. I love music of a large variety of genres, playing piano to relax myself. My class is usually filled with fun games with children and occasionally even their siblings join us to practice speaking Chinese, English or Russian.

Originally from China, I am now based in the US and have worked with researchers, NGOs, and international organizations to solve real-world problems. My subjects include GRE Quantitative, GRE, Math, Coding and Programming, and Chinese. Due to my practical experience, I believe that the most effective way to study is "learning by doing." I will create real-world scenarios and help students understand how to leverage their skills, thereby gaining a sense of accomplishment. Games, debates, and other interactive activities are also important for students to like the subject and improve their grades. I am confident that I have the capability and patience to be an amazing tutor. My Master's degree is data-heavy, and I accepted the rigorous training in advanced data analytics, statistical modeling, and programming. I was also a tutor for middle school students in Science and Math, meaning I can not only understand the difficult jargon, but also explain it in plain language. While pursuing my degree, I was a Chinese teaching assistant for undergraduates. By designing the curriculum independently, I helped students understand Chinese society from the economy, diplomacy, and family transformation. I am looking forward to meeting you all!

National Expert Xilin Chen has been teaching chess for more than 5 years and has a USCF rating of 2100. Xilin started learning chess in high school and soon become passionate to the world of 64 squares. He then helped his high school team to win the team 1st place trophy in a scholastic tournament.
