For students looking for comprehensive MCAT review in the Omaha area, Varsity Tutors can be a great resource for MCAT prep options. If an area medical school, such as the University of Nebraska Medical Center or The Creighton University School of Medicine, is part of your future plans, you have likely already been thinking about how to prepare for the MCAT. This standardized, computer-based, exam is required by almost all medical schools in the U.S. and will assess your potential success as a medical student.
Wherever you happen to be in your MCAT review, you may be wondering how to make the most of the study time you have before your test day. The four sections of the MCAT will challenge you in many skills that you should have learned throughout your previous years in school. Varsity Tutors can set you up with excellent Omaha MCAT preparation options to help you feel ready to reach for your top potential.
What will Omaha MCAT prep help me review?
The four sections of the MCAT include Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. You should expect to be at the exam site for around 7 and a half hours, with 6 hours and 15 minutes of that time being dedicated to testing. You will be scored on each section of the exam and given a combined total score as well. Let's take a closer look into each section and what concepts they will cover.
In the Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems section, you will be given 95 minutes to answer 59 questions. This section will be broken down into 10 sets of passage-based questions and 15 independent questions. This section will focus on the functions of the human body's tissues, organs and organ systems, the chemical and physical principles that operated the mechanics of the human body, and the basic chemical and physical principles of living systems. You will want to have a strong grasp of general chemistry, organic and inorganic chemistry, physics, biology, and biochemistry. A general understanding of chemical reactions and the periodic table will also be beneficial.
You will have 90 minutes for the 53 passage-based questions that make up the Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills section. Your verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, and analytical skills will be assessed here and you will want to have a thorough understanding of written English. The questions in this section will challenge you on how to apply ideas from a passage to new contexts, assess the impact of introducing new information to a passage, infer meaning from compositional elements, and in the basic components of a passage.
Next, in the Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section, you will face 10 sets of passage-based and 15 independent questions, adding up to 59 problems to be completed in 95 minutes. These questions will cover general chemistry, organic chemistry, introductory biology, and basic biochemistry and will focus on the processes that are unique to living organisms. You will want to understand how cells and organ systems work together and independently to accomplish growing, reproducing, adapting, sensing and responding to environments, maintaining constant internal environments, and acquiring materials and energy.
In the last section, Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior, you will again have 10 sets of passage-based and 15 independent questions to be completed in 95 minutes. The questions in this section will focus on how behavior can impact health, mental health issues, and the human and social issues you may face while serving an increasingly diverse population in your medical career. Your biology, introductory psychology, and introductory sociology knowledge will be evaluated here.
How can I choose the best Omaha MCAT prep option for me?
Prep courses and private tutoring are both very effective types of MCAT review that you can receive thanks to Varsity Tutors. They each offer unique benefits, and you may even find that a combination of both is the best option for you. Now let's take a closer look at each option and how they can help give you a more comprehensive review than you may be able to get on your own.
If you enjoy working in a classroom setting that focuses on a comprehensive, set curriculum, then an Omaha MCAT prep course could be the right fit for you. There are new sessions that begin weekly, and with the option of either a two- or four-week course, you can be sure to find one that will fit into your schedule. Prep courses will give you a complete review on each section of the MCAT from a highly qualified instructor.
If you choose an Omaha MCAT prep class, you will have the benefit of working in a fully interactive and collaborative environment. You will have the opportunity to learn new study skills from your peers while working on activities and the chance to ask questions in your class discussions. If you run into an area that you would appreciate more understanding in, you have the ability to discuss it with your instructor one-on-one.
If you prefer a more personalized approach to your review, we can get you connected with an Omaha MCAT tutor. When you work one-on-one with a personal instructor, you have the benefit of focusing on your goals alone. Your tutor can get to know your strengths and challenges to build a customized study plan with your learning styles in mind. If you need more focus on your time management, or you would benefit from more insight into the concepts presented in the Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section, you and your instructor can take the time needed to ensure you are comfortable in those areas before moving on to anything else.
How can I begin in one of these Omaha MCAT prep options?
Varsity Tutors can not only get you started, but we can also help you decide which review option could be the best fit for you. Whether you decide on the individualized approach of a private tutor or the well-rounded review of a prep course, you'll be making a great choice.
