Varsity Tutors can set you up with reliable Indianapolis MCAT preparation. If you are applying to medical schools, you will need to take the Medical College Admission Test, or MCAT. Medical schools use the score from your test as one of the key factors in determining your acceptance into their school. The test is a reliable indicator of how well you will do in the classroom, so your performance on the MCAT is important.
The MCAT consists of four sections, and it will probably be one of the biggest challenges you will face on your journey into a medical school such as Indiana University School of Medicine. If you are thinking about getting some extra help as you start your test review, you have a couple of options. You can join an Indianapolis MCAT prep course, or you can work with an Indianapolis MCAT tutor. Varsity Tutors can help you figure out the option that works in your best interests.
What concepts can I review during Indianapolis MCAT prep?
The MCAT is a computer-based, standardized multiple-choice exam that almost all medical schools require you to take. It tests you on important concepts you will need to know as a student in the medical field. It is made up of four sections, which include Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, and Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems. Each of the sections gets its own score. In the end, you will have a combined score of all the sections making a total of five scores for the MCAT. Any section may have an Experimental section that does not count toward the total score. Let's take a closer look at each section so you know what you need to review to do well on the test.
The Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior section is 59 questions with a 95-minute time limit. The questions include 15 independent questions and 10 passage-based sets with four to six questions per set. This section focuses on a few sciences such as biology, introductory sociology, and introductory psychology. It measures such things as behavior impacting health, mental health issues, and social and human issues in the medical field. The concepts you should know for this part include behavior and behavior changes, social and cultural differences that influence well-being, what people think about others and themselves, and access to resources. Other concepts are biological, social, and psychological factors influencing reaction and perception, well-being, and the relationships between social stratification.
The Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills section is 53 questions and has a 90-minute time limit. You will have nine passages to read, and each passage has five to seven questions to answer. The subjects you should know for this section include the humanities, social sciences, and English. It assesses such things as verbal reasoning, analytical skills, and reading comprehension. You should know the concepts such as basic components of a text and be able to apply ideas from a passage to new contexts, assess the impact of introducing new information to the reading, infer meaning from compositional elements, and integrate different parts of a text to increase your comprehension.
Next is the Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems section. This part of the exam is 59 questions with a 95-minute time limit. It covers chemistry, biology, physics, and biochemistry. This section focuses on the functions of the human tissues and organs, basic physical and chemical principles operating in the human body, and physical and chemical principles of living systems. The concepts you should know are chemical reactions, the periodic table, and the biochemical, mechanical, and physical functions of the organs, human tissues, and organ systems relating to the laws of physics.
The final part of the MCAT is the Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section. This section is 59 questions with a 95-minute time limit. The subjects this section covers include organic and general chemistry, basic biochemistry, and introductory biology. This section of the exam focuses on such things as scientific inquiry, reasoning skills, biochemical and biological foundational concepts, and processes that are unique to living organisms. Important concepts you should know for this part include acquiring materials and energy, maintaining a constant internal environment, and sensing and responding to environments. Other key concepts are adaptation and cell and organ systems within an organism work together to accomplish things like reproducing and growing and acting independently.
How can Indianapolis MCAT prep help me review?
Varsity Tutors can set you up with two effective options for MCAT review: private tutoring and prep courses. Each option has its own distinctive benefits, and sometimes students can use both to make the most of their study efforts. Let's talk about how an Indianapolis prep class or private tutoring will help you make the most of your time.
If you are someone who prefers personal interaction, then an Indianapolis MCAT tutor is a great option. You will work with a private instructor to find the most effective way to review for the test. Your instructor can get to know you and develop a plan by using your challenges, strengths, and learning style. Your instructor can focus on the areas of the test that you need the most help in understanding.
If you prefer more interaction, then an Indianapolis MCAT prep class is the other option. This interactive class takes place through an online, secure platform much like a regular classroom. As soon as you sign up, you can begin your study sessions right away. You have the choice between two-week sessions or four-week sessions. You will be able to chat with other students in addition to the instructor. You can ask questions and hear the questions others ask.

"I touch the future. I teach."... I am pretty animated, so first off I will say "When I talk, I use my hands a lot." I like to use pen and paper or an article that relates to the topic we are addressing; something new that is going on today that is relevant to something that they are going over in class. I use several examples of jumbled up sentences or scrambled sentences, missing one word or one grammar issue, and have them fix it. Tech-wise, the only social media I ever utilize is Pinterest, because I pin a lot of things like quotes and student-related stuff for study skills and learning how to jump a hurdle without lifting your legs for a metaphor.
