If you have the ACT in your future, Varsity Tutors can help you prepare with one of our Minneapolis ACT prep solutions. We offer courses and can help you connect with a personal instructor depending on your learning preferences, academic needs, educational goals, and schedule. Whether you're about to enter your junior year at DeLaSalle High School, you've just graduated from Washburn Senior High School, or you attend another high school in the area, it's essential to give yourself the time and proper resources to prepare for the ACT adequately.
Many students prepare for the ACT long before it's time to apply to their preferred college, and that can make it challenging to prioritize study time for this test. However, the ACT is one of the most popular college admissions examinations, and it is used by thousands of schools as part of their criteria to determine who they accept into their academic programs each year, so making the time to prepare is essential. Varsity Tutors can help you know exactly where to focus with one of our prep solutions.
What can Minneapolis ACT prep cover?
The ACT covers four key subjects; Science, Math, Reading, and English. You will have just under three hours to complete all sections of the test. Unfortunately, the time is not evenly distributed, and you are not in control of how long you can spend working on each part of the test. You only have 35 minutes to answer 40 questions each for the Science and Reading sections. The English section provides you with slightly more time but also more questions. For this part of the test, you have 45 minutes to answer 70 multiple choice questions. Finally, for the Math section of the test, you have a full hour to answer 60 multiple choice questions.
You may be thinking that if you finish early in one section, you can move ahead to the next or back to the last to make use of those extra minutes. This is not an option. You will need to devote some of your preparation time to become comfortable with the time constraints in each section so you can optimize the time you are given. It's also important to note that you are not penalized for guessing, so be sure you attempt each question.
Within each broad topic, there are individual subject areas to which you should pay particular attention. These include pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, trigonometry, reading comprehension, standard conventions of the English language, biology, earth and space sciences, physics, and chemistry. No matter which subject area you need to review, you can find the support you need to work towards becoming more familiar with the material with one of our ACT prep solutions.
Some of the skills you may want to study as part of your ACT preparation include interpreting equations, geometric shape calculations, data collection and analysis, probabilities, determining word and phrase meanings, making connections between different texts, identifying central themes in a reading passage, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, style and tone of language, and the scientific method. If you find yourself confused by any of the individual skills evaluated on the ACT, you can work directly with a personal tutor to refine your techniques.
If you wish to have your writing proficiency evaluated as part of your ACT experience, you will need to opt for the ACT Plus Writing. When you add the Writing section to the ACT, you will add an additional 40 minutes to your testing time. During this section, you will only answer one question, but you will need to write it out by hand if you do not have academic accommodations that provide an alternative. If your penmanship makes it challenging to read your handwriting or if you find yourself relying heavily on autocorrect to solve spelling and grammatical dilemmas, you may need to spend more time refining your writing.
What are the benefits of taking a Minneapolis ACT prep course?
Prep courses are divided into individual sections, and we have new sections that begin every week. You can choose to take four-week courses if you want to cover more material in greater depth or you may want to opt for one of the two-week sessions if you know you only need a light review.
All of our prep courses are held in a secure digital environment that is similar to a traditional classroom. You will learn from an experienced instructor who delivers lessons to the entire class and directs group participation. You may engage with your classmates in class discussions or work on projects together. This type of cooperative learning allows you to learn from your peers and gain insights when they ask questions you may not have otherwise thought about. If you find yourself struggling with a particular skill, you can get one-on-one time with your instructor to focus on it.
Students who thrive in vibrant interactive learning environments that promote both academic structure and facilitate discussion may find this is an ideal prep solution.
How can a Minneapolis ACT tutor help me?
One of the substantial differences between a Minneapolis ACT prep class and private tutoring is that, when you are working with a personal instructor, you have the opportunity to ask questions in greater depth. In a classroom setting, the teacher has multiple priorities. They must deliver the curriculum to the entire class, work individually with students who have questions, and promote group discussion.
With a personal tutor, on the other hand, you have their full attention. Your private instructor can take the time to get to know you as an individual along with your learning style, academic background, and areas of difficulty. They can target the exact areas you need to focus on during your test preparation so you are able to study more efficiently.
How can I get started with Minneapolis ACT prep?
Varsity Tutors can help you get started with the Minneapolis ACT prep solution that best fits your learning style and schedule. Whether you want to work as part of a group in one of our Minneapolis ACT preparation courses or you would prefer the personalized instruction of a private tutor, we are here to help. ...My years of teaching experience have helped prepare me with two important abilities: seeing language arts as a means to develop students' awareness and ability to communicate more effectively, and a greater appreciation for the individual student through balanced and effective classroom teaching and management. I teach because I have a passion for teaching, but mostly, because I care about reaching and inspiring each student from a wide array of backgrounds and abilities.... Being a teacher means going through a personal evolution of a sorts. The process is an ongoing reflection of what works, what doesn't work, and the continual realization that it is, indeed, a never-ending process. Where that may give a beginning teacher a sense of disillusionment, and maybe even despair, it's also one of the greater motivators after one teaches for a number of years. As well, within this motivation is also a recognition, the understanding of how change can make your role improve, but how intrinsic abilities can also be defined and strengthened. I believe that I have been given a love for students and a strong faith in them and in their ability to overcome anything to grow, learn, and develop. In my early years, so much energy was put into shaping curriculum, and that certainly has its benefits. In later years, so much energy has gone into shaping learning through both formative and summative assessments that show evidence of students meeting very strong, attainable learning goals in the English curriculum, and there is great benefit in these skills as well. It has been in the years in between that my real strengths have been developed, and those strengths are in developing communication skills that have enable me to connect, support, inspire, guide, mentor, and coach students from a wide array of backgrounds. Being a white dad who adopted trans-racially certainly didn't hurt my understanding and development, but I do know that my ability to care about students and see into their world, understand their culture, and truly care about them and their world, is probably the most defining and important step I have taken. Students know I care. I believe that a teacher needs to be able to know their content, build their lessons in community with their colleagues, but no single task has produced more results for me than my care for my students. Yes, a wonderful lesson plan, a continued and consistent series of lessons in a unit and a yearlong plan of powerful learning opportunities is so very important. But caring is a contagious thing. Promote it through modeling, and you might see how students grow in their caring for themselves, their learning community, their future.

I have a very flexible tutoring style, and my approach strongly depends on each of my students' needs. The goal is for students to leave in a more calm, confident state than before. Outside of school, I spend much of my time biking, doing yoga, cooking, and exploring new places with friends.... I would ask them some questions to determine what part of the concept is unclear, then find new and creative ways to explain it to them.
