The student and I continued working on practice problems from homework assignments. Today we focused in on the concepts, and setting up the right series of equations and assumptions. Once the problem was properly set-up, we could plug in the values and find the answer. I also showed the student some valuable guidelines and tips that can help him with unit conversions. The student and I covered: conservation of momentum, boundary layers, drag forces and the summation of various resulting forces. In the next appointment we will go over some additional practice problems/tests, as well as continue to work on an equation sheet in preparation for the next exam.

We met for an additional session this week in order to work on the material that will be covered on her upcoming exam. We focused on protein chemistry. We worked on the formation and hydrolysis of peptide bonds, the levels of protein structure, and the properties of each level. We discussed the properties of the different R groups for each amino acid and strategies for identifying and classifying them on the exam. We then worked through the different types of interactions that help shape the secondary, tertiary, and quaternary levels of protein structure. She seemed to feel more confident at the end of the session, and her speed at solving the practice problems increased as we worked.

Today's session allowed us to cover physiological metabolism. We discussed the feeding stage and the fasting stage, as well as what processes are activated/inhibited in the opposing stages. We also focused on intercellular communication, specifically the processes of G protein cascades, calcium ion cascades, and steroid hormones regulating transcription levels. After looking at hormones, we did a review of amino acid catabolism and synthesis by doing some sapling homework. He appeared to understand the concepts of metabolism in the body, as well as intercellular communication. I left him with the chronological steps for the cascades, as well as the primary concepts for amino acid metabolism. If he studies the steps and makes sure that the basic aspects of amino acid creation are understood, I feel he will do very well on his test. We will meet sometime next week in order to discuss nucleic acids.

The student's class is currently working on the wave unit. Usually other students study an introduction to waves, have a test on it, and then continue onto sound waves & their properties. The student's class is grouping all of this information into one test so I wanted to make sure she had a good grasp on waves as a whole before talking about specific types of waves. Her class had discussed sound waves specifically in more detail than they had discussed waves in general so we took some time to go over the basics. We discussed the two types of waves, how they behave, what they actually are, as well as broke them down into their parts (i.e. crest, trough, wave speed). As we went through our topics I made detailed notes with diagrams to help her understand the concepts when she is going through her homework and studying for her test. I was able to get through all general subtopics on waves including diffraction/refraction/reflection, waves moving through different media, as well as a brief introduction to sound waves. We ended our session discussing mechanical waves versus electromagnetic waves and will continue our discussion next week on the Doppler effect, harmonics, and conservation of energy.

We covered two pretty detailed topics this week and also did some AP exam review. First we went over neurons and action potentials. I really wanted to make sure he understood how action potentials works, what a graded potential is, and how summation works to create action potentials. We also went over the anatomy of a neuron and the different types of neurons. We did some practice problems that I brought with me about neurons and action potentials. We went over a practice test that he had started in class. He got only a few questions wrong which were genetics related. We did a review of the different types of disease inheritance, Punnett squares, and pedigrees. Lastly, we started the immune system. We discussed the first line of defense and the non-specific immune responses such as the inflammatory response. We will finish going over the immune system next week.

We went over buffers again and did more practice problems. After the session she is more comfortable with doing the problems by herself using the tools I taught her. We also touched on amino acids and their pka's. She had no difficulty solving amino acid problems as well.
