If you think a formal Las Vegas MCAT prep course could help you study for the exam, Varsity Tutors can find you a top-notch course today. MCAT is an acronym for Medical College Admission Test, a standardized exam designed with the input of medical professionals and current med students in mind. Nearly every medical school in the United States requires applicants to submit an MCAT score, including local institutions such as the University of Nevada Las Vegas School of Medicine. Every institution has different standards when it comes to what score they are looking for, but putting your best foot forward can only help you pursue your educational goals.
We can help you feel prepared on exam day by helping you enroll in a comprehensive Las Vegas MCAT class. Every class goes over both the structure of the test and the content you need to know, covering everything you'll need on test day. Keep reading to find out more about how we may be able to help you.
What content areas are generally covered in a Las Vegas MCAT course?
The MCAT is a computerized assessment featuring four multiple-choice sections. Each section is scored on a scale from 118-132, and your four section scores are summed to produce a final grade in the range of 472-528. The MCAT is a long test (six hours, 15 minutes total testing time, seven-and-a-half hours including breaks), so your intellectual stamina is tested just as much as your academic knowledge. Here's some more information about each section of the MCAT:
Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems
The exam's first section deals with topics like tissues, organs, and organ systems. You will need a solid understanding of introductory biochemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chem, and introductory physics in order to successfully answer the questions. There are a total of 59 questions on this portion of the test, including 15 standalone items and 44 questions based on one of the 10 reading passages provided on the exam. You have 95 minutes to answer every question.
Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills
The test's second section assesses a test-taker's verbal reasoning, reading comp, and analytical thinking abilities. All 53 questions on this section correspond to one of nine reading passages about topics such as economics, psychology, literature, sociology, and history. This is the only section on the MCAT that does not have a scientific focus. Instead, you are asked to make valid inferences based on the information you have, determine the definition of an unfamiliar word or phrase through context, and identify how hypothetical information might impact the meaning of a piece. You have an hour and a half to answer all of the questions here.
Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems
The examination's third section stresses the science of life at the cellular level. Some of the topics you're expected to understand include how cells react to stimuli, the cellular processes for getting energy and other materials necessary to sustain life, and how individual cells work together to accomplish macro-level goals like growth and reproduction. This section follows the same basic structure as the first, as you have 95 minutes to answer 59 questions split between passage-based and individual items.
Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior
The assessment's fourth and final section concentrates on the "human" side of medical school: mental health, sociology and its impacts on medicinal outcomes, basic psychology, the impacts of behavior on health, and social issues in medicine. For instance, you are expected to be able to identify how social stratification can affect a patient's access to healthcare resources and their overall well-being. This section also follows the same structure as sections one and three, as you have 95 minutes to answer 59 questions, including standalone and passage-based items.
What are some of the benefits of taking a Las Vegas MCAT course provided by Varsity Tutors?
Every Las Vegas MCAT class we provide consists of you, an expert instructor vetted by Varsity Tutors, and a handful of other students studying for the MCAT. Your class meets on a regular schedule, and you may choose between two and four-week options to help you find something that fits into your crowded itinerary. We also start new classes every week, so it's always a great time to get started.
Furthermore, every class takes place on our exclusive live virtual platform. It's basically an online classroom that makes you feel as though you are in the same room with everybody else, and you can interact with both your instructor and fellow students in real time. Why go through the hassle of driving or otherwise commuting to school when you can make your class come to your favorite study spot?
Sharing your test prep with other students can also prove beneficial. For example, you can work together to foster a learning environment where everybody can deepen their understanding of MCAT concepts. If you learned a great test-taking tip outside of your Las Vegas MCAT class, you can share it with your new friends so that everybody can benefit. Similarly, another student who comes up with a fantastic memorization trick can share it with you to help you retain info more effectively. Having multiple students in the virtual classroom also allows you to split the cost multiple ways, making expert instruction more affordable than you thought possible. If you feel like you need individualized attention to master an especially tricky concept, you can also arrange private study sessions with your teacher outside of normal class hours.
Another advantage of formalized test prep is the ability to take practice exams and get a feel for what the actual MCAT is like. There is a lot of reading on the MCAT, so your instructor may show you active reading techniques to help you remember more material. Developing a familiarity with the way the MCAT words things can also help ensure that you don't miss any important details in a question.
