We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader. and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

ISEE Tutoring review by Arielle in Justice, IL
I had the student complete the sentence completion section of the practice test and worked with her on a mind map in preparation for writing an essay in response to a sample prompt next session (tomorrow). As has been the case with previous sessions, she tends to do everything internally (read questions, eliminate answers, and so on). She is not accustomed to (and/or is uncomfortable) vocalizing her concerns, frustration or confusion, underlining or circling aspects of word problems, crossing out "the fluff", explaining her reasoning out loud, etc. I have made some headway in getting her to come out of her shell by asking her questions about her dancing and asking her questions that get at fun, personal experiences, which I can then use to make select problems more relevant for her. Since she has officially been approved for more time for the test, I'm going to have to come up with something practical and easy she can do to, in essence, take breaks while taking the test that helps break things up -- that ensures she is doing her best and is most productive as she tackles individual pages and sections. For the pre-write, I had to ask series after series of questions to get her to agree to a writing prompt (the power of choice!), pick the focus of the prompt (Lake Tahoe), and then build out the spokes/details, but, eventually, her level of engagement spiked, and she began freely contributing to the planning (both talked about and wrote about inner tubing).

ISEE Tutoring review by Lindsey in Justice, IL
The student and I worked on discussing and practicing for the essay portion of her exam. We talked about what the questions will be like, and how to plan what to write. She and I talked about brainstorming, outlining, and writing the essay. We talked about how to gather thoughts and organize them, write an essay, and proof-read afterwards. Generally, she was fine at spelling and sentence structure, and we'll continue to work on essay writing in a finite period of time. She and I then worked through several reading comprehension passages. She struggled with a few of them, particularly those that contained a number of ideas or topics with which she was wholly unfamiliar. Often, however, her answer choice was the next-best choice to the true answer. We went over each one and the correct answers and she was able to explain why the correct one was indeed correct. I suggested that she and her parents do practice reading comprehension questions several times a week so she can continue to feel comfortable reading short passages with new material and focus on answering just the questions asked.
