HSPT Tutoring review by Jon in Salt Lake City, UT
The student had taken a tutor-supplied placement exam, practice test 1. He self scored the test, and had a 91% average throughout. We reviewed all of the incorrect answers and discussed problem solving and test taking strategies as we discussed the types of questions and how to approach them on the exam.

HSPT Tutoring review by Michael in Salt Lake City, UT
Today the student and I looked at the geometry section of the learning tools. Several of the problems seemed considerably more advanced than what one would expect to find on the placement exam, since they appeared to be of a level consistent with a high school geometry class several months in. We decided to go back to working out of his manual, which assorted receiving high schools recommend as a good facsimile of the exam itself. We worked our way through most of the math practice test. For the most part it seemed surmountable, if not always easy.

HSPT Tutoring review by Luanna in Salt Lake City, UT
Today we only spent time on the math section of the test. We worked on volume, perimeter, measuring angles and surface area. The student needed a bit of a refresher for the formulas but was able to utilize the information I gave him and the formulas to come up with the answers. He seemed to get more relaxed as he got more comfortable with the way the problems were set up and knowing when a certain formula was needed.

HSPT Tutoring review by Phoebe in Salt Lake City, UT
We focused on three sections of the assessment exam: verbal, math, and reading. We went over vocabulary, analogies, and logic puzzles. In math, we completed a variety of practice problems, and I taught the student how to use the FOIL method to multiply binomials. In the reading section, we worked through comprehension questions for two different passages.

HSPT Tutoring review by Malena in Salt Lake City, UT
The student did very well today. We covered ELA, studying specific words, definitions, antonyms and synonyms for these words, and Latin prefixes that help to denote meanings of the words. We also practiced logic and he used less than and greater than symbols to help him with determining answers to these questions. I am sending him a link this evening for placement exam flashcards, Latin roots, and definitions to words that we worked on together. Lastly, for math, we continued using the diagnostic tests, working on dividing fractions, angles of a triangle, surface area, volume, and algebraic equations. He is doing phenomenally! He just has to be very diligent about studying his vocabulary words as well as math formulas.

HSPT Tutoring review by David in Salt Lake City, UT
The student and I looked at the placement exam today. We did a full practice test together and then went over the questions she'd had trouble with. She did very well on the math questions but had more trouble with verbal, getting more than half wrong. We talked about each of the words and she wrote down their definitions - I think it would be helpful for her to write out sentences using each of the words she has written down. She should also review words from previous sessions, since there were a few we had covered before whose definitions she forgot. We finished the session by looking at a list of common prefixes and suffixes and discussing how they give clues to the meaning of a word. As usual, she was quick to ask questions and grasp the explanation. I think she's making excellent progress and will improve her score on the day of the test.
