Session Summaries by German Tutors

German Tutoring review by Kat in Naperville, IL
The student took a short assessment to test his phonemic awareness. He did very well with rhyming words and identifying word initial sounds, but struggled some with identifying final sounds and with blending and segmenting. During the lesson, we worked on decoding CVC syllables with short "a" sounds and practiced spelling and reading words (such as "mat" "sat" and "rag") on a magnetic board. We also visualized a sentence and drew a picture to match the sentence. He was engaged and did a very good job sitting through the lesson. Based on the assessment and how he did at the lesson, I think he needs practice with decoding and blending individual sounds into words. His mother purchased a student reader for us to use that I think will be very helpful.

Today was my first session with the student. He is working on a persuasive speech for class, so I reviewed that with him. I helped him revise and clean up his outline, transfer the main points to a notecard, and run through the speech a few times, paying attention to the presentation elements.

This morning, we focused on math, the student's toughest subject. I upped the difficulty of questions to match the harder ISEE problems. We did drills regarding how to find x, square roots and exponents, and PEMDAS. Then I gave her a list of common vocabulary words found on the test, and asked her to write sentences around them. We finished by doing more synonym exercises.

Today I tutored the student and we worked on knocking out some more of his assignments for his online Chinese course. He is about halfway through and wants to finish with all 170 or so by the middle to end of May. All in all he is making progress.

German Tutoring review by Andrew in Naperville, IL
Today the student and I went over the structure of a typical essay. We then worked to develop a method for brainstorming the content of his first essay, and then moving from brainstorming to outlining the body of the essay. Finally, he wrote a first draft of his essay's introduction. He will reflect on his introduction, and come to our next session with some ideas to improve it, based on a couple of questions I posed at the end of our session. He is very interested in improving his writing, and appears willing and eager to take the necessary steps to that end.

German Tutoring review by Andrew in Naperville, IL
We had a great session, in which we reviewed giving and receiving directions, as well as talking more about their hobbies, and other vocabulary they might need for traveling. We reviewed past tenses forms, pointing out the differences between simple, present perfect, and past perfect. We also spent a lot of time explaining case and gender, looking at accusative, dative, and two-way prepositions, and common word endings that always determine the noun's gender.
